As I understand the PH is grvity based and the BW is mechanic/gambler style.
So both would have their fields to use (e.g. PH not while sitting). And the BW you can only use with sleves down as the PH (as I understand) can be used with at least patially sleeves up (what I like). |

Gork is correct; the holdouts work a bit differently and therefore the effects you can do are slightly different. For instance, it's very difficult to wave your hand over an object and make it vanish with a gravity holdout, whereas the Black Widow can do this.
For the Romero holdout, I guess you can pull your sleeves back a little when not using it, but I don't see how you'd really be able to pull the sleeves back when it's in action-- there's not a lot of distance that the holdout will be moving (though it's better than the FK holdout due the pulley) and additionally, you will see the thing dangling down with sleeves back. Since it lacks a locking mechanism, you'd really be at risk for flashing. Additionally, you're other arm is hooked up at the wrist level and pulling your sleeves beyond that will be an educational lesson for spectators . The way around that is to make a special hook-up that is placed further back on your forearm, but that defeats one of the genius elements of the Romero holdout-- convenient left arm hook-up. |

Hold Out is like love it uses the same word to talk about hookers on one end and Ropeo and Juliette on the other.
Are you looking for a pull or a dropper or a pendulum or a topit or a reel... they're all hold outs. What do you expect from your pull is one thing. The hooking device is another thing. The way to catch it in the middle of an act (even a close up act) is yet another. May suggest you to read Tommy Wonder's second book on the subject. His work on the Jack Miller hold out (a pull) can be extended to many other pulls. He also addresses the pendulum (the Upside Down Topit) There are also some very good notes by Jay Scott Berry sold in France by George Proust (with English text) for using a reel by the belt... Even if you are prepared to pay the right price, it will not cover the cost of "elbow grease". Just realize that this practicing part is the most fun since you'l only use your pull sparingly (a few seconds in the show) and enjoy it.

Ok, I at first bought the Black Widow and other than Frank said I an NOT disapointed! It is great!
It is what I thought the Raven would be like as I bought it back then. Surely it is partly of the same material (the fluffy part e.g.) but it is very well thought through in detail! 1. The BW is silent, the Raven did talk 2. It is fine crafted. Surely done with materials one can get his hands on easily, but not cheap built like the Raven is (just my opinion). The Raven was like I grabbed in my spare part box, got some random objects, took some glue and there I would have gotten the Raven. The BW is well thought over and built with much love for details. It is nearly the best you can do without professional factory production 3. The price is totally ok and maybe you could have charge some more! 4. It is as small as you can do without factory. So it is not bulky as I read. Small enough. There is only one slightly bad thing I have to mention: Mine was entangled inside as I got it. Just minimal and you would not have figured out if you would have used it as it was (maybe this is why it passed Darryl`s QC?). As I reconfigured it for the right arm I saw it. Because I did not know if it has to be like it was by purpose I did let it stay this way and reconfigured it for the right arm. This entangled it totally until it did not move any more. So I undid the entangled part and reconfigured it. Now it works very well! You need to visually check after production for entanglement (cause I read multiple times about here before and you could not feel it) I once (after I returned the Raven) thought about constructing my own piece, which would have worked somewhat like the BW but on a very other priciple (no g*****n l****e). Maybe this would have been some smaller and looking more factory produced but the BW is totally what I was looking for. Cause mine would have used a very other principle you could e.g. have changed things without moving the hands. Just by holding your Hand over the piece stationary for a moment. Maybe some time I will start this project cause it really is easy if you got the Idea but for now I will use the BW because it is really good and what I was looking for. I did not buy it in Germany cause there the price is nearly double of the original but the canadian price is very responsible for this piece of work! Surely it needs some practise to get it fluently for performance but all can be done without practise easily for testing or first steps! So Thumbs up! Really! Everyone who likes to do Ravenlike effects, I really propose buying BW. It is like the Raven Pro version to me! Thanks Darryl! The Gecko and PH I will get later too cause they have really some diferences in their field of work. |

Nicely done Gork. I can't see the BW work at all and there is no sound (talking) to it at whatsoever. That's wonderful.
Mine should be here next week. I thought over what you and others have said and took the plunge, even though it took 2 monthly payments to pay for it. It is expensive for the hobbyist, but I am expecting it to work beautifully like you have just shown. Have you done any appearances with it or switching items instantaneously? Regards, dsalley13 |
