If you would like to know of another person's experience with AGT, here is some food for thought: http://itricks.com/news/?p=4146#comment-7451

And because you seldom get to see an act in its entirety and in context the "reality" aspect is very much in question. I just can't help thinking that the producers are just licking their chops waiting for a David Martin to come along and hand them a monumental foul-up to exploit. Really they have no need to manufacture such an event any more than the producers of American Idolatry have to try to find people who are delusional and believe that they are accomplished singers. Does AGT use "trick photography"? Not in the strictest sense of the word, but you most certainly cannot trust what you see as being genuine. Selective editing can do wonders for what you want an audience to see. Just ask Michael Moore. But I digress. I remember seeing Becky Blaney years ago and visiting with her about her "modification" to the linking rings to get the chair all tangled up. It's a great gag in her show, and she performs it expertly. I'm sure that all we got to see of the fella doing the "self levitation" was his punch line. Interesting thing about punch lines, they're not worth a thing without a setup. "Reality TV" indeed. Never has been worth a thing on any show. |

I think everyone has it covered.
All the reality shows use the same templates: -Stack 5 acts and make then look bad, make the 6th act a positive one. This effect is used to boost and enhance the perception of how good the 6th act is ("The judges have seen a string of weak performances throughout the day here in Detroit. Can Danny TheWizard turn the day around? Find out after the break.... I totally agree with selective editing. The producers on any reality show have a template and no matter what how good you are you need to "know your role"....translation=you are a puppet and you will play the act they want you to play.... It is all ratings driven.... To make it interesting they pick one act that will be the star....having a good story is very important ("Joe's family struggled to put feed him and his 9 brothers.....one night while he was eating the only meal he had in 3 days, a slice of old moldy bread and a cup of cold water, Joe decided to become the greatest magician in the world. He began to use his imagination to escape the daily poverty of his real life. He started by closing his eyes and imagining that he was the great wizard Merlin performing the greatest magic in the world. Eventually Joe bought his first TT with the money he by being a beggar in the town square. 20 years later Joe is one of the best magicians in the world....and tonight he will attempt an amazing trick to honor his hero, Merlin the wizard". I think someone should do a show about reality show producers.....a real expose on how TV reality really works....not that most people don't know it but having a program made about it would really put things in perspective for everyone. |

I happen to know Dave Martin he stops in the local magic shop here in Connecticut. Dave called me & told me to tell all the magicians he did not mean to expose the illusion . Dave also told me what they showed on telivision was his rehersal run practice only . He explained to me that this mess up was aired to make reality telivision & for good ratings ! That's what he told me you guys figure it out ....

Correction : Television is what I meant to write . Dave has so many stage illusions why would he use this one ? It must have been a rental .

Hey Geoffrey/Tophatter,
Of course David didn't mean to expose the illusion .. I truly believe that. As far as I can figure out the situation .. David was in Vegas, he had no props and found a rental .. whatever he could find. He obviously wasn't prepared for the biggest gig of his life. I do feel sorry for him .. but, he's made a lot of mistakes in his past and he needs to finally come clean once and for all. Enough of the stories ... Steve |

Here's a question ..
Does the "practice run" involve the judges?? They clearly were there when things got messed up. Piers even asks if he had made a few mistakes ... of course, everything went "perfectly." Again, the truth would be a nice place to start .. how about David?? Steve |

Think about David Blaine and Criss Angel, who often edit the spectator's reaction from a different "take" to give the impression that they saw exactly what the camera just showed you. I'm not trying to advance the "conspiracy theory" on this topic, but it certainly is conceivable that they COULD have done this.

Oh for C*^%&^% sake...does it really matter if "they" were there or not...really. The guy screwed up big time, doesn't appear to be the first time, is that not enough. How much can this event be analyzed and criticized?

Off topic...Chezaday I enjoyed your short clip on Paul Osborne's video "Nightmare in Magic Land".
Now back on track...In David's last appearence before the mistake he stated he would bring something bigger and better or something along those lines. I think it was just a matter of being unprepared, he most likely rushed the practice on this and I don't think it is or was his. I am sure the show put a lot of pressure on David to do something bigger and better.

Chezaday I could not agree with you more he should have praticed the illusion regardless. I also thought the same thing the judges were present how could this be rehersal ? I think he just messed up & should have been honest about it we all make mistakes .

I asked Charlotte Pendragon to pop on here and clear this 'conspiracy' thing up, but the thread I directed her to was locked. She did have this to say on the subject:
Quote:
Chris, I would have but the topic is "locked". Sorry... No, even though I was on the show...I have NO IDEA what is going on with other performers. NO, due to strict TV standards and federal regulations, a contest of this nature can not be rigged... implying that D Martin messed up on purpose. I wish to thank Charlotte publicly for taking the time to offer her observations on the incident. Chris |
