Sean, the FCC and possibly the Federal Gaming Commission. Not sure if you recall a particular game show that was rigged by giving the correct answers to contestants before the show. They would keep the crowd favorites around until the ratings started to dip.
Just a side note. I can't imagine anyone wanting to sign on knowing you are going to have to blow your performance.

There are so many loop holes in all of this, it doesn't hold water. Performers on AGT have told us the audience responses to their acts were changed. That's your first clue. Second clue, why are the Pendragons/Shimshee on the same show as the amazing, the award-winning, the allegedly poor-rehearsed, the animal mistreatment defendee......ladies & gentleman, Mr. David Martin! If you are going down that slope, you better talk about the scene on the way down. If this "show" were operating on the basis of talent only, would we be having this discussion? I'm glad these FCC regulations you speak of are applied here. We are not talking about Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune. We are discussing a reality based show. You need to go back and try watching the last 10 years of reality television.
Thanks, Sean

David Martin is going to be on the Dave Attell Gong Show, the same show that brought us the 2 catholic school girls stripping and bleeding from the hands, a 400 lbs. guy escaping from a strait jacket (got to love the love handles that pop out on this one) and a VERY hairy guy and a crack W#$@% girl going a doggie style dance routine. Wow!!!!!!!! How fitting that is. lol

Okay, I met David Martin at his parents magic shop in Mystic, CT. They told us how they had a wonderful son, who was a wonderful magician mentored by David Copperfield. Well, David Martin showed up. First off he performed a few tricks for the customers in the store, and every trick he exposed the "magic" element with the fact that he is very unrehearsed and has no real technique. Very "unpolished". My nephew was 11 at the time and LOVES magic. He asked David Martin a couple of questions and was completely ignored. Friends of mine, who are real magic lovers, went to see David Martin at The Palace Theater in Waterbury, and ended up leaving. They said the performance was plain sad and David Martin's behavior was extremely arrogant. It's sad that his lovely parents are supporting him, and he is not honoring them, nor all the magicians everywhere with some respect for the field, and some serious rehearsal time. It's time for David Martin to either work to get better or to find a day job.

I had never seen this guy before, but when I saw him just now the first thing that came to mind was an Angel copy. And then you say he is using the same assistant Angel used to have. Come on...
He simply did not grow out of the copying phase when we first start out in Magic.

Dirko, I sure hope not. As far as mistakes go, I've made plenty. Never on national TV, though.
One bad one I made, in 1977, was The Zombie. It's not because of a lack of practicing and rehearsing, just a situation of bad luck. The ball popped up higher than I wanted, exposing the gimmick. The sound of the audience's disappointment was sickening. 300+ people. My local magic club CRUCIFIED me. As well they SHOULD have, as I ruined the effect for every magician that performs it. I haven't performed on a stage since... Doug |

WOW.....So this thread was too long for me to want to go back and read all the posts, so please forgive me if I repeat what has already been said. I had the wonderful oppertunity to work with Melanie (the girl in Martin's Shadow Vision) when I was on AGT in Las Vegas. Well we worked long distance. She helped train my dancers for the act when I wasn't there. Anyhow, while talking to her she had told me that she had been on AGT before with Mr. Martin. I immediately knew who she was talking about, so of course.....I had to ask.....WHAT HAPPENED? Being an AGT Vet I have gleemed some insight that may be able to answer some of the questions posted throughout this thread.
Melanie told me that the prop was broken. Mr. Martin was made aware of the flaw and was encouraged not to do it. There was a way to perform it and make sure it went fine but he was not interested in practicing. She said he practiced it for only a few minutes before they went on, even though she was telling him they needed to do it more. In order for the B.A. to work he had to hold it up and he must have forgot and let it go....she tried to pull it back up but it was too late. They did cut the performance of the head falling out of it but that was because the illusion alread had a catastrophic failure, and it was not necessary. The judges gave him a few oppertunities to redo the illusion for the cameras but he continously refused saying it "went perfectly." They also cut the routines for time. Kevin James' performance in vegas was cut, Anthony Reed's performance was cut. Even in this season.....Murray's ferarri production was cut short, Grasso's manip routine was shortened, and Chipps original performance was nearly 5 minutes.....lol....and they cut out the the best part of my modern art. I added an "in half" type effect to the illusion allowing me to do pull ups and swing my body back and forth. That's just how it goes with that show. There was a magician who performed a mi**or production when I was in vegas an it had a catastrophic failure. The whole illusion was blown/exposed. The poor guy owned up to it, and apologized for screwing up. They could have easily exploited him but they did not. In my contract it did state that they would not purposely expose magic tricks. According to Mr. Martin they didn't expose anything because he told them it went perfect. Based on my experiences with the show had he took them up on their offer to repeat the illusion I believe that they would not have shown the errors. As far as magicians go.....they are looking for the next David Copperfield, or a large vegas magic act.....it's obvious. If someone is delusional and thinks that their stuff is good enough then they asked for it. Nathan Burton set the bar very high at the start of the show. Just my opinion, hopefully that answers some of the conspiracy theories. |

There were clear windows behind me with open curtains. The windows were VERY clean- so the audience could see the reflection of the g////k behind my cloth. If you perform in front of windows, close the curtains.... |
