I would go for the books. I like books more than videos. Well that's just me.
Books are for education and videos are for imitation.

There is only one Art of Astonishment video and I've heard mostly negative things about it. Apparently it's poorly done and explains only 7 or so effects from the books. Compare that to the books which contain literally hundreds of effects all written with Paul Harris' witty, often hilarious style. Go for the books. You're going to get way more knowledge and entertainment from them.

The books are three volumes worth of effects, the video is just a few select effects. The books are much better.

I'd suggest the books.
That's over 200 effects and something like 900 pages of material. Do you know how many videos they would have to produce to cover all of that stuff? Penguin has a good deal on the set, looks like $104.97 for the three hardbound books: http://www.penguinmagic.com/ MagiCat |

Be aware you don't have to buy them all at once though. It seemed like a scary investment for me to make all at once so I started with volume 1 and after that I knew I HAD to have the other two. You're going to want them all too once you get a taste of the material, but starting with just one or two is fine.

Get the books......There is so much great material in them. For the 105 dollars you spend here, it will provide you with more material than 4 gimmicks at $25 dollars a pop.

As usual, the book is always better than the movie.

Thank everyone for their input. I ordered the books a couple days ago from penguinmagic.com.

I'm sure you'll be glad you've invested!! If you've ordered all three be prepared for a brain melt down, there is so much quality stuff in the AOA books it's difficult to know where to begin!
I posted a question in the 'Ask the Manager' scetion last month about the possibilty of a forum for the AOA series as the effects encompass such a wide variety of props.... cards..... coins...... chocolate.... MacDonalds Milkshakes!!! So far no one has got back to me.... anyways!! Enjoy your books!! |
