I find it interesting every time I have a one on one conversation with a college in this field that many play some type of musical instrument or have been in some type of band in the past.
So if you play some type of musical instrument and also perform mentalism please post what you play and let see how long this list goes. I will start it out. I play guitar and drums. In my early 20s I played in a cover band called “CO RD. R.O.C.K”
No one said it would be easy, or did they?

Yo!
Started when I was about 13 or 14 w/ the guitar and moved on to Synths and Drum Machines when I was about 18. I started my own "One man band" called A.M.S.G. I wanted to be the next Trent Reznor. LOL

I started playing in bands when I was in my teens. After my first divorce I started playing as a pro (No Day Gig) That was more than 30 years ago. I play bass and mess around with the other instruments out of self defense. I also impersonate John Belushi as "Jake" in the Blues Brothers Show in Orlando and elsewhere.

I actually notice this too, not just with mentalists but a lot of magicians that were also musicians.
For the record I'm a singer, a guitarist, a pianist, and played all types of brass and wind instruments. I'm also currently a middle school music teacher (although I've also taught at the high school and elementary levels as well) -Eric D. |

Air Force Band for 4 years as a percussionist, then 12 yrs on the road in show bands playing drums, keys and guitar performing in casinos, resorts, nightclubs. This was back at a time when you could find magic shops in most cities and they provided respite from hotel rooms. The last five years of doing music for a living was studio work, mostly for Saturday morning cartoons, corporate videos, commercials and regional artists. I switched to magic for a living in 1989. I still have my original 1965 Ludwig silver sparkle drumset and photo with Buddy Rich from 9th grade, and once in a while hear recordings I've made on XM folk and bluegrass stations. I currently combine magic, music and mentalism in a show called "The Rhythm of Magic" SM.

Does noseflute count?
Seriously, I used to play piano, now it's synths... I've dabbled in trying to learn how to play guitar.. I tend to say I am good enough to fake being able to play.. I've started to lear how to play bass guitar. For many many years, I sang in an electronic pop band. Live I only sang, mostly. In the studio, I wrote all the music, played and programmed all synths and sang.. the band was called love|less .. and true to being me, I did put in "subliminal messages" in the music that was only understandable when played backwards... it was mostly innocent and cheesy things like "play this track again" and "buy our album" and similar =) and finally .. yes, I do have a noseflute.

I played guitar, keyboard, and sung in several bands as a teenager, but grew to want my musical expressions to be more personal. I eventually started playing, and still enjoy, classical guitar, even though I still listen mostly to indie/60s rock.
it seems like people that want to entertain or express themselves to others through the arts often try several different means to do so. I've also dabbled in screenwriting and poetry.
Some people hear voices.. Some see invisible people.. Others have no imagination whatsoever.
