I'm trying to work on the Cups and Balls routine from MWCCIM. I cannot get the balls I have (standard red knit) to stay in finger palm position. I can classic palm them but I don't see how this would work for the move at #29. I am able to do this type of move very well with sponge balls, but these aren't. Any suggestions?

How about doing a thumb palm instead.

You might ask Bill Palmer or Pete Biro here on the forums, both have a lot of experience with cups and balls.

You don't have to use red knit balls. It is possible to do the cups and balls with sponge balls. When I first started in magic as a teen, I cut my own sponge balls from a natural sponge and used those in my cups and balls routine for a good many years. When I started, knit balls were not an option. Everyone used cork balls, which I dropped all over the place, kind of in the way you describe. Unless there's a good reason not to use sponge balls, use 'em!

There are two finger palm positions - the basic and lower position. The basic involve holding the ball lightly with the middle and third fingers curled around a ball. The lower position involved the third and last finger curled around the ball.
It is merely curling the fingers around the ball so it does not drop out. There is no special grip to it. Hope this helps. |

Yes, I think the first C&B in Tarbell is a spongeball routine.
I had trouble with my first cheap plastic set because of how light the pom pom balls were. It was easier with a pro set. But I don't see why not do it with spongeballs.

Hi Old Man, Magician Mike Caveney. Once said if you master the Cups and Balls you are a magician .I don't know how long you've been practicing the Cups and Balls. Sometimes it takes years to master them. So stay in front of your mirror and practice, practice ,practice and then practice some more ,and one day you will say "hey I can finger palm the Balls" . I'm a slow learner so it took me a long time to master the cups and balls. Even now I practice them once or twice a week. that's all I can say.
