There are a number of tricks in which the deck must be reversed (turned end-for-end) before the selected card is inserted back into the pack, such as strippers or tricks using one-way back designs. Seems like an easy trick, right? I found out it’s actually much harder than it appears.
The problem is not with MY reversing the deck. That’s easy. The problem is, what does the SPECTATOR do with his own selected card? Does he look at it, show it around, and then insert it straight back into the deck? Or does he handle it in such a way that he himself turns it end-for-end? If so, then MY reversing of the deck is counteracted! This is tricky, because it depends upon watching the spectator after he chooses a card and noticing whether he turns his card in the normal course of handling it. Well, I tried this effect recently, and believe it or not, I had to do it three times before I finally got it right! One time I tried NOT turning the deck and it still didn't work! Needless to say, this lessened the impact of the effect. The spectator must have inadvertently handled the card differently each time he chose it, sometimes turning it end-for-end himself, sometimes not (it was just accidental; I don't think he was deliberately trying to trip me up). Unfortunately, this is the kind of trick that's hard to practice by yourself. Is there a trick to this? Do you find that every spectator handles their card differently? Do you have to watch them very carefully to see what they're doing? Since this is a basic move, I was surprised by how tricky it has turned out to be. |

Easy answer:
Have the spectator slide the card out of the deck onto the table; from a table spread. You reverse the deck. Then, ask the spectator to lift up his end (of card), merely from the table, to peek its indices. He can't reverse it, now. HRe-spread deck on tablr and have him slide it back into deck.
