Hey Lexiloo, I thought that was you! Then you were gone. Next time we'll have to get lunch or dinner.
Come to think of it, that's a really good reason to have one... justifies my only working inside.

I've gone through many stages... usually it's the trap door.. buta a bump..... but After taking backdrops, banners and other displays I've decided that it doesn't get more shows.
Today I use backdrops, banners, illusions, music, costuming, assistants ect - to sell larger shows and build value. So if someone tells me the show is in the garage I'll suggest they MIGHT get some of those inexpensive plastic tablecloths at the party supply store and hang them up if they want to make curtains. To me, the people are there to see the tricks and the performer. While it's nice to have a backdrop, it hasn't put any extra money in my pocket....... at home shows.

Maybe not for you, Jay, but it certainly has boosted my referral rate. Giving our clients that little extra "flash" means more referrals and that translates into more bucks.

I just wanted to clarify something. I agree that it could be next to impossible to actually generate dollars simply from having a backdrop, but the ADDED VALUE and PERCIEVED VALUE on the part of your clients is worth the price of ANY backdrop system. (Although I highly recommend Jeff's!)It's not about booking a show, it's about re-booking shows, it's about looking like the professional you are, and even about making your life easier. Be sure, that if you do use it as a selling point, you are informing your client of the benefits, not the feature of a curtain. The benefits include better pictures, bringing Las Vegas to their living room, etc.

I think you have talked me into one Skip. I have one that takes me a bit to setup and is not the best one for someones home. I should have picked one up at Kidabra but I was just at 50 lbs of baggage for the plane. I will have to make sure what one I want and order it soon.

So. you guys that use one. Do you just show up with it? Do you tell the mom that you're bringing it? Do you have you're name silkscreened on it? Do your promotional pictures show you standing in front of it? and most importantly, when a repeat or referal client calls do you ask them what they remember (or heard) about your show that inspired them to call?
I carry banners that I place on either side which bracket me in and also cut off the view of anyone who tries to stand on the sides but I quit taking the backdrop for home parties. Click here to view attached image.

My name is on the front of my Lefler Table with my logo. The table, the backdrop and my Flying Carpet illusion make up my Birthday Party child keepsake photo. It's something that children and parent show to everyone. I also follow up my shows with a "Young Magician" certificate and laminated ID card a week later...including the keepskae photo on the certificate. Any business person should ask how and where the client heard about them...and keep records to track their marketing. I do have clients calling and asking if I'm the magician with the beautiful party "stage." It works...and that translates to profit.

FYI- I am selling my Jeff Jones backdrop in the LET'S MAKE A DEAL SECTION if anyone is interested. Nothing wrong with it at all!
It really does add a 'WOW' factor to your show when the audience walks in. |

I always offer a backdrop for all my shows.
It is a great selling point. I don't want to surprise them with it, because for price shoppers it can be what increases my value and sells the show.

I use my Jet Set with red velvet curtains at all my shows. I just wouldn't feel comfortable without it.

You can see my Jeff Jones "Pirate" backdrop here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-QntWGsr7g Notice that the silver septer can be seen easily, even with poor quality playback, and a tiny viewing screen! I think Jeff Jones will need to buy a factory soon! I'm delighted to see so many UK entertainers are getting wise to his awesome products. These beautiful backdrops will really set ANY show up....I'm frankly surprised that they're not yet "standard kit".....clearly the world of kids' entertainment is full of cautious folks! I've said it before, but am happy to reiterate - if I'd seen one of Jeff's backdrops the day I started out as Potty the Pirate, I would WITHOUT ANY DOUBT have bought one right then! It is still regrettable to me in a way, that I performed thousands of shows without one. Easy to carry, less than a minute (really) to set it up.....and it fits ANYWHERE. By a long way, the best backdrop on the market for solo performers, or small shows. Potty |

Listen to the advice from Matthew W as he is an expert at childrens birthday parties. I personally did not use a backdrop when I used to do parties the few times I did I would use a custom made one.
Thanks,

Yes its amazing how I've used it in the smallest living ans rooms and the largest stages and it look gorgeous It folds brilliantly behind itself into five 2 1/2 foot sections. The height is completely adjustable as well. Get the big one.

School shows, bigger functions etc then I could imagine using one of these.
But birthday parties? It's another trip from the car, you have to carry it into the house, set it up (often in front of the audience), tear it down (same thing), take it back out to the car. Then multiply that by 4 or 5 birthday parties. On Saturday. And Sunday. - Not for me. To me the birthday business is about getting in quickly, zero setup, doing the simplest show that you can do with minimal props and minimal reset (yet still being strong to have the children and the parents raving about you), pack down, and onto the next one. If you need a backdrop to impress people, more power to you. I don't. .... not wanting to sound too arrogant here, but it's the truth. |
