I used to watch the big breakfast a lot and Jon Allen did a trick like this called Chomp at 7.23 because it was too early for sleight of ahnd just aftre zig and zag.
So people saying its honey fresh might be wrong cos I think its like Chomp. |

Hi Simon,
Someone was watching The Big Breakfast?! I'm impressed. Seriously, I found this thread and it is interesting. I came up with 'Chomp' in 1998 and after selling it discovered through other people that my idea was not new. Meir Yedid had come up with the idea of biting through all the cards except the selection years before. His is called 'Biting Sensations'. There are a few differences between mine and Meir's in the routining and the physical aspect of the deck But the effect is the same. Biting through the deck is most certainly a fun and surprising way of finding a selection but it is not a new one. Regards, Jon

For those asking here is another review of Bite Me.
http://www.xmission.com/~zerowc/reviews/0803biteme.html If the video trailer left you the impression that it will cost $25 each time you do the trick because it appears you bite into and destroy a full deck, then you have just proven how effective the illusion is! The bite deck is reusable with a small amount of prep work. As far as the audience is concerned, they think you just destroyed an entire deck just for them. That's part of what makes the trick so memorable. Paul Gertner |

What is nice about the effect is that for once, you don't have to secretly switch your gimmicked deck with a regular one when you are done: People will well understand why you need another deck after this effect!
Of course, given that this trick is quite strong, what you may do afterwards with your deck of cards will probably look a little dull after the craziness of this effect ...many interesting magical effects with gimmicked decks, but wanting to perform some of them for the same audience implies 'one deck for each effect', which is not easy to handle ...maybe it has been discussed in another thread? |

Is it possible to use this deck for other tricks before actually performing Bite Me?

In the video demo the signed bitten off piece looks close enough to the 'actual' signature on the fully 'restored' card.
Is this how the effect will look or will the bitten off signed piece look 'off' and be a possible discrepancy that needs to be dealt with through distance from the audience or misdirection? to me the piece in the mouth will be focused on and will act as a convincer that I really bit off the restored card at the end of the routine. if the signatures don't look close enough and don't pass this test then the effect won't be as strong. I'm sure it's been routined to perfection and a perfect solution has been solved by Paul Gertner. I'm just worried that I'll get something that won't fly with my skeptic friends with whom I would perform this to. if it's exposure to answer my question then no worries - don't reply. thanks |

I would be curious to hear people's opinions as to whether or not this effect is appropriate in a restaurant setting. (or anywhere where food is being served for that matter).

In other words, you are left clean. The signature in the mouth is not exact as you're concerned, but if it was that would constitute real magic and not a magic trick! The closer of the restored card covers up any worry of the piece in the mouth not being right (if some chance someone would notice it, which I doubt); the bigger action would cover up the smaller one. Showing the piece in the mouth is only a small fragment of the routine. There is some prep work involved in the routine, but Bite Me is a real worker if you're willing to put the time into it. I am selling one right now just because it is not for me. Just my two cents... Mack Magic

This is not for me either. There are some angle issues and it's gross. But for the right audience, could be very memorable.

To BSEARS: No I would not recommend the effect in a restaurant where food is being served. In a bar yes! Especially if you are looking for a reputation making effect they will ask about. Also the nice thing is you will have an effect that will not be copied as much since it does take some presentational chops (pun intended) to pull it off.

To Apprentice:
Mack Magic's post was correct. The piece in the mouth is only a small part of the routine and the full card "with" their signature is on it in the end which is what they remember. And Apprentice you are right the routine is designed to use that moment as a convincer without overplaying it. Considering your concern about the "signed piece" and the fact you mentioned performing it for your "skeptical friends" and your screen name "Apprentice" I am going to guess you are younger and perhaps fairly new to magic. If that is the case it is possible that the type of effects you are more attracted to (or that will work best for those skeptical friends) are magic tricks that are more like puzzles. These are often tricks that rely totally on a clever gimmick that can be presented almost as a challenge for those watching to try and figure out. Many of the "street magic tricks" seem to fall in the category. As you advance in magic and study it more you will begin to learn more advanced presentational techniques such as misdirection that are used to shift the audiences attention where you want it, or in the case of the "piece in the mouth" to do the very subtle work of calling just enough attention to an object to satisfy the "question" in the mind of the audience, without calling so much attention to the object that it begins to create more questions in their mind. It a very fine line. My feeling is that a well designed magic trick is one that takes advantage of presentational techniques as well as clever gimmicks, so you will see those elements in the tricks I have on the market. I hope this helps answer your questions about Bite Me. Paul Gertner |
