I agree with Mb217, all the variations of the Daley trick consitintley get the best reactions on dvds where its performed.
Just look at spectators reactions. I performed it for a taxi driver today and he said "How is that possible" I just put my finger up to my mouth and said "Shhhhh" and walked away. |

I am surprised no one has mentioned Daryl's "Presto Printo". Excellent effect where strange things happen and everything is examinable in the end.
Aldo Colombini has a great effect in Apocalypse called "Italian Serenade" which is a very nice variant of Peter Kane's classic "Jazz Aces". I am on board with everyone here on Dr. Daley's Last Trick. While Doubleback is a nice touch, I feel that the original effect really does not NEED the enhancement if your handling is clean and convincing - as all handlings of any effect should be. Walt Maddison's "The Sting" from Apocalypse is a knockout Oil and Water effect with a real hard 2x4 smash in the spectators' head at the climax. "Masque" from Focus is wonderful. In fact, there is a wealth of great packet magic in Goldstein/Maven's fine book. "Russian Roulette" from Prism is simply excellent for a bit of examinable close up mentalism Jerry Mentzer has a lot of cool packet material in the Card Cavalcade series, as well as the slim book Packet Tricks, and Card Files one and two. J.K. Hartman is also a good source for some nice material. Alex Elmsley has already been mentioned in relation to his original Ghost Card. But in his Collected Works volumes you will find a number of great and examinable packet effects with some really sweet sleights such as the Everchange and Neverchange Counts. Nick Trost is a conniseur of great material. Best, Vlad |

Vlad, Nice list and I would add John Bannon's work on packet effects as well. They are most certainly worthy of inclusion. Loads of good stuff from him as well.
As to Double Back, I love the effect but once I returned from whence it really came in Dr. Daley's Last Trick, I haven't played with it much since. But still it is a very good take on the effect. Quite clever and still worth having. Now, I like Twixter as perhaps a real predecessor to NFW, but in that case I would say NFW is a better handling and more streamlined version of the effect which IMHO makes it better overall. So I guess it can go both ways as to originals.

The Shadow Card from Harry Anderson "Wise Guy" is my fave.....and Tommy Wonder Tamed Card....even though it's not examinable, but Mr.Wonder teachs the Psychology that makes the Audience think that they just handled the Cards.....also Eugene Burger Observo its a Killer Effects that uses the same Psychology as if let the Audience handle the cards

The following tricks are examinable packet effects :
1. The effect "Masque Backwards" from "Impromptu Packet Tricks DVD" by Aldo Colombini is a nice impromptu version of the effect "Masque" from the book FOCUS by Phil. 2. "Kaleidoscope" by Roy Walton 3. "Technicolor" Aces by Darly 4. "Cardboard Chameleon" by Darly |

I'm a big fan of the B'Wave. I have a packet and stage version. What I like about it is that it's very simple to do, but with the proper setting and patter it packs a powerful punch. And there is so much versitility to it. And since it is so simple to perform, it allows me more time and forces me to focus my energy on the story and presentation which really sells it. I love it.

3 card monte mostly because of the ending, they never see that coming and I really enjoy that moment. Also, I present it in the way defined by the patter, as if this is something that happened to me, that just plays well for my personality. I don't like to 'fool' people, even though when I get to the line about, "if you can guess the color of this last card,"people will spit out colors. They are dying to participate; another reason I like this one.
Like anything else, presentation is everything. I forgot to mention that is the 3 card color monty. |

One I've been working on lately is "Travelling Man" from The Complete Walton, vol. 2. It's a two-phase 'Twisted Sisters" type routine with no gaffs or extra cards. It uses eight cards, in this case four blue backed and four red backed Kings.

Daryl's "Presto Printo" is derived from Duvivier's printing but with a streamlined handling. Love both routine with a clear preference for Daryl's script even if Dominique's routine is now available in Bicycle cards
Aldo Colombini's "Italian Serenade" and Darwin Ortiz presentation of Peter Kane's superb "Jazz Aces". The effect is simple direct and to the point without being too short. Juan Tamariz's Oil and Water: a lesson in showmanship and misdirection... and so much fun to watch (hence also a lesson in script and entertainment) Twisting the Aces with most of its variants (I love the colour changing backs when the effect remains close up) including the Fred Kaps one using Ascanio's technique. Too many cards by Derek Dingle: it has been my opening effect for decades (yes I'm that old) I should also mention here that such small packet tricks avoid us to get (at least directly) into the "pick a card, any card" type of effects which by now, due to the incredible number of variants for the revelation of the card, tends to appear as being all the same for the spectators.

@lawrence O,
Nice point. IMHO, if you do a trick and find their card under impossible conditions once, you can obviously do it again so variety is key and packet tricks are a nice break. I feel they are also good to do after normal trick so you can wring in a new deck (pocket switch). |

Royal Scam and Duplicity by Bannon (and I'm expecting his next addition to Fractal Card Magic, Spin DOctor, as well) have just been added to Color Monte as the best examinable packet tricks I use. These are all powerful and well thought out routines. Bannon has put a lot of thought and work into these.

I do a few different packet tricks. I have an an effect called "Back 2 Back 4 you". Its a practical variation on the all backs for a packet routine. I also do an effect called "Front flip" where the double backers before double facers.

My favorite packet tricks are 1) Jumping Gemini 2)Twisted Aces 3) Dr. Daily's Last trick and 4) Color Monte. I am surprised I am the first one to mention Jumping Gemini. I am also a fan of Oil and Water and Cannibal Kings, but I have not put enough work into these to have them committed to memory.

Bravo, D Walker on mentioning Ortiz's Jumping Gemini! What a Jewel. I've used it now for over thirty years, and it absolutely KILLS the spectators.

There is it, right?
4 aces are shown. A little ambitious card routine is done - showing that the aces always appears on the top..even if its put on the table..or on the bottom of the pack. It is then revealed that in fact all 4 aces are in fact 4 10's - or any other card. and then finally - all 4 cards are shown to be kings. |

Close. Found in Ortiz's book: "At The Card Table." Also, Vol. 1 of the DVD series.

Sorry! Should pay a little more attention at times. Cards CANNOT be examined after effect is completed. You just put them away. (Never been challenged over this, though. Effect shocks them too much to ask. Ha!)
