A new release by Paul Gertner sounds very exciting. I haven't seen the Youtube video of this yet, but would be interested in any comments from anyone who has seen it or, even better, actually has the effect. It seems to be similar in concept to Anniversary Waltz (i.e. emotional hook) but I'm a bit put off to read a gimmicked deck is involved. Is this a 'gaffed to the hilt' deck or just a few fake cards that can be ditched to end clean ?

I received this today.
I am drawn towards effects that have an emotional hook for the spectator. Most of
my close-up work is geared this way. Heartbreaker is a perfect fit for ME.

To answer some questions, no it's is not a gaffed deck. You use a regular deck,
but you are supplied a deck of cards to use with your deck and each time you perform, 2 cards from the deck you are supplied will be utilized. One given away, the other discarded. You are supplied with enough cards to perform the effect 26 times. Additional decks can be obtained from Paul at a discounted price.

The DVD supplied with Heartbreaker explains everything in detail and Paul gives you a few different hand-lings as well as some ideas from David Williamson. A minimum of card handling skill is required.

Now the trailer doesn't tell you the whole story. There is a bit more than what you see, so it isn't as clean as the trailer, but it's pretty darn close and I wasn't at all disappointed. In addition, you could obtain the cards you need very easily so it isn't absolutely necessary that you obtain the special deck from Paul
but it's priced reasonably enough so it's not a big issue. (I live close to Paul so I can just pick them up from him.)

The trailer tells pretty much what you see aside from some minor additional handling you don't see. This is one effect I will use. You get to take your spectator's on a pleasant trip down memory lane with an astonishing outcome. One they will not soon forget. This is a keeper and I know the spectator WILL keep the card. Thanks Paul for releasing this. I'm going to have fun with this.

Ya the trick looks good but the demo does look a bit misleading.

Just got mine the demo is misleading I guess he did it so no one would duplicate it cause if you seen the real performance you could figure it out. but over all the effect is still good. should have know if its not shot in one continuous shot then ur missing something they don't want you to see

Paul did this several times up at Fechters this year and I can tell you that not only did it look great (from a magic standpoint) but the story is so engaging and interesting, that it becomes more than just a "card trick" but a cool magical experience

Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to answer a few of the questions some of you have had regarding my new trick Heartbreaker. DJ is right, this was inspired by Anniversary Waltz but I wanted an ending in which I was not giving a DF card as a souvenir. In performance Heartbreaker uses a normal deck and three additional cards added from the Heartbreaker Deck. They are all normal with the exception that a Heart image and a Broken Heart image are drawn prior to/or during the course of the trick. Two cards are consumed with each performance, therefore the deck included gets you 26 performances and a refill deck good for another 26 performances are available for $10 on my website.

Regarding the trick itself and a few questions posed about the demo video because there was no intent to mislead anyone. The purpose of the video was to show you what the spectator experiences during the course of the trick from an effect standpoint. There are really only two main impact points during the trick, the vanish of the initials from the card in your possession and the appearance of the same initials on the card they have been holding. Like Vernon always said…”Simplify.” Of course there is also the underlying spooky impact for the spectator of wondering just how you could know the initials of someone that are emotionally attached to from their past, and that is what causes the reaction in the spectator. It creates a nice blend of magic and mind reading.

If you are only curious as to the the method of the trick, how the initials get from one card to the other then you might be disappointed that it involves no electronics, chemicals or special cards that change due to the heat of your hand. It is simply a series of clever double lifts, a subtle use of misdirection, acting, mime, and a very basic magicians force that accomplishes the trick. If on the other hand you like magic that creates the kind of emotional impact that you see on the demo video and you have an understanding of the above mentioned magic principles then I think you will love Heartbreaker as much as I do.

To clarify the minor handling David mentioned in an earlier post that you don’t see on the video, (and which after the finish the spectator does not even remember) is this. After the initials are on the separate cards you mix both cards together and place one in each of their outstretched hands to see if they can sense which one is the Heartbreaker, because as you tell them: “You’ve heard the expression left holding a heavy heart. Which one is heavier?” They succeed in determining which one is the Heartbreaker and the trick concludes with the main effect of the trick the signature transposition.

The magic I am creating these days is not designed to fool magicians. Today my requirements for a successful effect is that it must have an compelling presentational angle, a strong magic impact and the ability to connect to the audience on an emotional level as well. It’s hard to admit that when I perform Heartbreaker I get as much reaction from the spectator when she see those initials as I do when the big steel ball drops out of the cup at the end of my cups and balls. After Unshuffled this is my current favorite card trick to do.
I hope you enjoy it also.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for your detailed comments. I've already ordered Heartbreaker and look forward to adding it to my regular repertoire. I love the emotion and impact associated with Anniversary Waltz (having performed it at many, many weddings and anniversary parties), and never thought I would find another effect in the same category. Heartbreaker totally fits the bill and I can't wait to start performing this.

Hope there will be an opportunity to see you in the UK at some point in the not too distant future.

Once again, many thanks.

I received this over the weekend and I like it. The handling has to be a bit close to the chest at one point but I don't think that is any big drawback (no pun intended). Paul - the one thing that I found strange was the shuffling of the deck. The way the effect progresses it makes sense to use the four and ace and it makes sense for them to be on top of the deck. In that context the false shuffling didn't seem to fit in. If I were going to shuffle the deck I think that I would then shuffle the cards to the middle and act like I'm getting the cards together as I spread through the deck. Shuffling the cards and having the top two just happen to been ideal cards to use seemed a bit odd to me. So if they are on top I would dispense with the false shuffle and just do the trick. However, all that said, I still recommend this effect. It has a nice emotional hook. Nice job Paul.

As Paul Gertner said in an earlier post:
"The magic I am creating these days is not designed to fool magicians. Today my requirements for a successful effect is that it must have an compelling presentational angle, a strong magic impact and the ability to connect to the audience on an emotional level as well."

Paul has accomplished this with Heartbreaker.

I admit that I was blown away by the demo that skipped a couple of integral steps, but didn't find this to be a problem. It's a great effect for real world spectators. You can read my review at:

I ordered mine. Hope I can make the gimmicks here. As if I do this trick I will want thousands of extra gimmicks.

The gimmicks will be difficult to make by yourself as they are made a certain way but you can probably figure a way to make them.
