I am looking to buy a coin rattle gimmick and would appreciate some advice on the best/most practical one on the market?
I see that Joe porper sells one which looks kind of cool but want to check my options first. I have a Rubenstein rattle purse on order which I can't wait to work with-so many applications possible. Best John |

I have not used one, but have read here on the Café that David Neighbor's Rattle Gimmick is a great one to have.
Someone can correct me, or add additional information! RevJohn |

Dave Neighbors does indeed have an excellent rattle gimmick. Plus, he's got a whole booklet of routines to go with it.

May I suggest that you buy a Nelson Downs type of gimmick (thst's the real name of what you're talking about) with a cork or rubber ball which can block the noise and where you can elect to put one or several coins: the noise of one coin falling against another (in an Okito box routine for example)is fairly different than the noise of four coins tumbling over one another. If you had to choose take one with only one coin as the clink would mark the passage (the magic moment like the falling in a glass in some coins across routines or some coins through the table routines) when if you have several coins in your ND gimmick, the noise of the first one will sound awkward. Naturally if you can alter the number of coins along the way (which you cannot do unless you do some work on your gimmick -not that difficult by the way-) you're in heaven. Noise speaks to the subconscious and since you will have used what Darwiin Ortiz calls Time Displacement misdirection: the magic moment will be marked very clearly and convincingly. Then the memory rewinding point (as discovered by Al Schneider) will start at that moment. A great misdirection.
For ideas on how to affix the ND Gimmick: get David Roth Expert Coin Magic and read his advice in The Tuning Fork (at the end of the book). Congrtulation for getting into tht aspect of magic. You're in for a nice trip.

I'm with RevJohn. get David Neighbor's "ND gimmick," it one of the best I've seen. I have the one that came with Roth's Tuning Fork, its OK but David's has a better sound to it. Not that, that is really important, because you only need a little sound, but it helps. I've also had a chance to check out Joe P's rattle. It's very nice, but the on/off switch (if you want to call it that),is not only the thing that make it nice, but also the thing that hurts it in my eyes. It's so easy to turn on and off,That I once saw a magi using it and he accidentally shut it off at the wrong time. Just MO.

The reason why I didn't mention David Neighbor's ND gimmick is just pure ignorance and not any form of rejection.
I'll look it up. Thks for mentionning it.

Thank you so much David!! I'll send you an email right away! The thing is I'm working on a routine and I want to add a sound in a very specific moment in order to get more impact. I don't know your device (I think the Dawns/Roth device is suitable to what I need), If you could check the video and check if your gimmick would be suitable I would be pleased. The thing is an empty fist (left) should sound as if it contained two coins when shaked, I can wear a jacket if needed there is no problem.

Welcome to the Café, PIPO...
Loved the video, very nicely done. Man, you don't need a rattle. But if you just gotta have one, David's is great! Again, welcome and keep up the good magic. -Mb (USA)

Thank you! I' fluttered.
I just want to make the fist sound again before the last two productions, is it just a little touch but I think it would be cool. This trick is integrated in a longer routine and I would use the rattle sound once also in a “coins across” routine. I don’t want to overuse the device, just two times in the whole routine, I think the sound deception is very powerful!. Thanks again to make me feel at home in the Magic Café Best Regards PIPO |

Hi John:
I have the Roth gimmick (directly from Roth, but I think he's out of them - but hey, he may have had more made). Nice design, not too big or cumbersome, but takes a little monkeying with to get it just right for your arm. This seems to work best higher up on the arm around the elbow. Dave Neighbor's version (directly from Dave) is a great design, but the strap (at least for me) was a little small, and the sound a little quiet. Seems to need to be closer to the wrist for maximum noise potential. The design of the "on-off" is VERY good, however. I've held and handled the Porper version. It's a nice design, good sound, but the device itself is VERY big, IMO. Seems to be designed for the wrist location (short strap) but the size, again, a little big for my comfort. Dave Neighbor's gambit of the "fake shake" is hilarious - I've seen him do it, and it fooled me. Something to think about . . . Doug |

The " Fake Shake " As you say is one of the big things Of my rattle Book! And as Elbows Come in all sizes! It's hard to say what Size To put on there! |
