Howdy guys,
Just wondering, I was thinking on doing a cups and balls routine in my street show and was going to use ordinary plant pots for the cups, and onion bulbs for the balls and have a final kicker load of huge onions or some other fruit or vegtiable. My questions are: Would this play well? And, What would be the best size pots to use?
It's like that? I guess it's like that! OH YEAH!!! YEAH!! - wait, what are we talking about?

If you are going to have multiple items in a single cup that is nested on another. Regular clay flower pots don't give enough room.
Small 3" "Rose Pots", have a higher lift as the outside edge is wider (when you see one, you will understand) and give more room. And will hold things of decent size to play well. It almost doesn't matter what the cups and balls are, (I have several pastic sets, aluminum, copper, and brass) as long as you routine it well, and produce an appropriately amazing final load(s). The cups and balls are just the props, and it is the performer who makes the props become magic that lives in the hearts of the audience. Cups and Balls would have been dead a long time ago, if people weren't still interested in seeing a good performance of it. BroDavid

But is my idea good? I want it to be a garden style show.

I think it is good, if you have a routine that plays it up, and you have good cups and balls technique!

Look up Vernon's "Impromptu Cups and Balls" with coffee cups.
It doesn't matter the props. Go for it.

I saw this in one of my old books. I like it and went out and got the plant pots. And did this for about a year. This has been about 20 yrs. ago. I see if I can find the book.

I would be afraid that the pots would break. You couldn't bang them around like you could copper cups. I, also, have given thought to using small pots, but too afraid of the aforementioned.

Thank you pchosse, Tarbell was where I got the "Flower Pots and Oranges" from. That was 20 yrs ago. Man! How time goes by. Thank you for helping me find the book again. By the way, it's in Vol 6, page 48 of Tarbell. "Flower Pots and Oranges"

Magicusa - you are welcome!
Dancing Carrot - I think the impromptu cups and balls with coffee cups and bills that Pete is referring to is actually Charlie Millers', not Vernons. Vernon has an impromptu cups and balls in the Stars Of Magic, but not with coffee cups. The Charlie Miller routine was originally in Chaps Scrapbook, a magazine put out by Frank Chapman in the forties, and reprinted in a single volume in the seventies. It (the Miller Routine) was also reprinted in the Bruce Eliott book "Classic Secrets of Magic", later reprinted as a paperback called "Great Secrets of the Master Magicians". Charlies' routine was as practical a version as you are ever likely to see, and incorporated some moves that have become classics on their own. For instance, the visible ball through the cup, and the non-expository loading sequence. Well worth looking for! Best, PSC

Dustin,
Check out the Ian Adair books. I recall a routine using flower pots and 'seeds', and large blossoms as final loads. This of course led me to the Ramsay routine using ice cream cups for closeup. Yes it is a good idea. -Jonathan

Check a couple of major gardening centres for a new type of pot that came on the market just last year.
It looks exactly like the clay pot in color and textured but is, in fact, made of recycled vinyl and is virtually indestructible. That would get away from the fear of breaking the cups. |

Just remembered... years ago I did a routine using flower pots as RICE BOWLS... I put a rubber chicken in one pot. Filled the other with puffed rice, put the chicken on on top, turned 'em over and the cereal doubled in quantity... then I produced the rubber chicken to the line "A Chicken in Every Pot."
Man that was a loooooooooooooong time ago.

It doesn't really look good on your part. I think you should stick with some normal cups and balls.

magicman222,
I agree with you 100% about 50% of your suggestion. Using normal cups makes good sense. Not those odd magician's things that serve only to make the final loads look as large as possible next to the cups. Just so you know, Ken Brooke showed how misguided that concern is over twenty years ago. However, as to doing anything in public with normal balls... maybe we move in different social circles... those strange crochet things you see in the shops make people want to examine them. Olives, walnuts, cherries and crumpled bills work just fine. Unless the venue has flowerpots in which case the idea is sound. Trifid seeds?

I agree with Jon Town. It's the change not the size.

I just saw the MOST amazing Cups and Balls using very very tiny cups (can't give away much as the creator is re-releasing it soon, and the announcement is his to make).
But talk about a cups and balls routine that fits into your pocket...... It is real close up and not really Busking fare, but nonetheless, it is unusally amazing, due to the small size of the cups and what goes on with the routine. Tiny little balls, and tiny little cups make for BIG magic. So Danny, at least in this case, size doesn't matter.... BroDavid
