Had a chat with Alexander Marsh, of the Café, the other day got to see some of his effects and thinking behind is entry book "Hybrid Mentalism".
A real blend of classic, bold and modern styles. A mix of audience tested material here from close-up to parlor and stage. In particularly discussed his take on the close-up drawing duplication: a very visually disarming method to and his 37th Deception; a great stage effect allowing for audience participation from the whole room. But it appears this book will have so much more to offer. Its been getting great reviews including from Jerome and Looch. More details here: http://alexandermarsh.psychomagic.co.uk/ Jerome Finley: "Alexander Marsh and 'Hybrid Mentalism'... what can I say? After Al told me he wanted to write a book I felt compelled to encourage the young man and wished to see his ideas and dynamic approach to mentalism placed into words, if nothing than for my own use and enjoyment! For a number of months now I have used his routine 'The 37th Deception' and his brilliant, 'In Dramatic Fashion' process and revelation in my professional work and performances. Within a book filled with very clever, useable and strong routines, I have found this one piece and subtlety worth the price of the tome many times over, and this, (without hype and at the risk of sounding totally cliché) is absolutely true. Alex has a desperate and sincere passion for his art and performances which I find lacking in many of today's students and performers of mentalism. The love is there and the material is here in his wonderful first offering, 'Hybrid Mentalism.' All this AND he's not even charging a thousand bucks for it! I enjoyed the book, material and ideas set forth and trust you will too. Thank you Alex for a remarkable first effort and offering. You made my day!' Ken Dyne: "In this work Alex kindly shares the way he has been performing some classic ideas in mentalism, it's really nice to see how another performer approaches his work!" Looch: “When I first read his ideas I was delighted in the simplicity & strength of each effect. Not only that but I could immediately see within his writings that he was a worker. Alexander…has given you an insight into his diabolical mind. The routines and ideas in this book will far outweigh the price you have paid for it.” John Barrett: “Well firstly I have to say that the material within is fantastic, it really is, and theirs a nice variety if pieces. Your material is the kind of stuff that I love, and it's all very well thought-out and put together, and feels fresh and different, which is good. The drawing dupe is very clever, about as direct and fair as you can get, and everything makes sense and flows well. The Ambitious Peek is such an innocent looking thing, very usable and workable, and also with great angles as it can be done practically surrounded.”

"a very visually disarming method" - is a great way to describe the design dup. from the book.

I managed to get a sneak peek of Hybrid Mentalism.
Alex has put some great material and thought provking ideas between the covers. My personal favourites were: 37th Deception: A normally thrown away and contrived force is used to not only great affect but also combined with a killer revelation. Its bold; I LOVE this. Want: A very good process based presentation for a multiple out effect. Leave an Impression: Workers will love this little ditty and is such a powerful effect for such little investment. Misers Peek Wallet: Amazing way to peek information that is deceptive and oh so cheap to make. Despite my mass amounts of peek wallets I'm still making one of these babies up. These are just my favourite selection; you get another 7 effects! The other effects are very workable and thought provoking. You would be very, very hard pressed to buy this book and not be able to take something of value from it. Great contribution to the community Alex Kindest as always, -Paul

In the spirit of transparency, I just swapped manuscripts to get my hands on this baby. Obviously, some very clever folks from his side of the pond have expressed their glowing praise.
I would like to add my (off-key) voice to that chorus. I really enjoyed reading Alex's book. He's a very clever guy. I really like a number of things about this book: 1. Some very clever workable material 2. Alex's great writing "voice" 3. The fact that these ideas are real-world workers Just some thoughts... I like the multiple (modified) applications from the world of card magic. Several methods common to the pasteboard aficionado, have been keenly adapted for some very sneaky work. I love it. I like that Alex that has taken some methods, to apply in an entirely new way. Wonderful. I too agree with Paul's comment regaring WANT. I thought this really added something to the genre of this effect. Since no one else has mentioned it, I want to praise Alex's great "Sixth Sense Ploy". It think it is perfect. Alex has created a great visual display, which I am sure dramatically improves any presentation you care to use this for. This would be Uber-cool to use with ANY binary system. This is fantastic. Thief of Thoughts is an common-genre effect, but I particulary like Alex's (pseudo) explanation and frame. Another winner. LOVE-HATE: Simply wonderful. This is great. I am emailing Alex about this directly. Perfect. and much more... I am sure Alex is quite proud of this release and should be. This is a no-brainer. Cheers, Sean |

I got this and only had brief time to scan through (still putting some final touches on my Athos routines).
When I read Sixth Sense I envisioned the whole scenery in my mind. BRILLIANT! (And I mean that!) That idea alone for me is worth the price of the book and much more. Also Love / Hate plays on a premise very dear to me. I have an unrelated effect (unpublished) which I dubbed ANCHOLOR and, as the name may give away, is based on anchoring a color (to an emotion). I plan to merge these two effects (mine and Alex's) into something which then can become a multi-phase routine. I will go into a more detailed review in the next days (I promise).
Then you'll rise right before my eyes, on wings that fill the sky, like a phoenix rising!
