"First of all, I want to thank you for sending me Steve Dobson's new DVD. I enjoyed watching it. As always, your production is first-rate. Here is my take: I have been lucky enough to receive a copy of Steve Dobson's The Works from the folks at The Magic Bakery. The production has all the things we have come to expect from Steve Brooks and his associates. Let's get into the material that Steve Dobson has been using for the past 25 years—We know it has been audience tested. “Coins Across” is the first routine Steve shows before an audience. He is a likable performer and it shows in his interaction with the group. This routine reminds me of many of the Matrix type routines where the magician uses his hands to provide cover for the passage of coins from one place to another. The routine will be perfect for a “four top” at a restaurant. The action takes place on a close-up mat. The last coin, of three, is less magical than the two that precede it, but it still brings the routine to a conclusion. In the very clear explanation, Steve uses a purse frame, but in the performance he does not. Further there is no explanation as to why. “Aces to Jacks” is the next routine that Steve shows to the camera. The four aces are produced from the deck in a flashy way (Steve allowed Bill Malone to share this production in one of his videos). The spectator's favorite ace is used and all four cards turn to the favored ace. The packet then becomes four cards with backs on both sides, and finally, the packet of cards becomes the four jacks. The aces have returned to the deck. The explanation is quite clear and the moves are discussed in a separate portion of the DVD. “The Portable Hole” is next on the list. Steve uses a pocket handkerchief and likens it to the cartoon hole seen in many of the Roadrunner films. He uses three coins and they vanish, one at a time. After the third coin has vanished, all three coins are found under the portable hole. I found this sequence to be very similar to Steve's “Coins Across”. The explanation is quite clear. This will require a little practice to be able to this as smoothly as Steve makes it look. Back to a card routine, it's called “The Other World Poker Hand”. Four cards are introduced and they go through a kind of “Twisting” as they turn over one at a time to show four of a kind. The backs change color and then change again to a third back. Nice routine that is well explained. This is not a knuckle buster and is well within the range of most intermediate performers. “All Backs” is another packet routine. Four cards are shown to have only backs. This display is quite good and not at all difficult to accomplish. With a snap of the fingers, the four cards become the four jacks. This is a very good routine that happens at table level. “My First Card Trick” is an interesting routine. The deck is fanned to show the cards separated into red and black. In the context of explaining how Steve learned his first card trick, the cards mix themselves into a thoroughly shuffled deck. There is a knack to doing this routine, but I am sure you will be able to accomplish it with just a little rehearsal. In the bonus section of the DVD, Steve shares his “Hermann With A Twist”. This is a pass with a number of applications. I think you might find it interesting. Finally, there are a number of interviews and comments. Steve shares his love of the art. Steve Dobson is passionate about his magic. I found his point of view to be that of a professional. His magic is certainly worthy of your consideration. Respectfully, Paul Green |

I like that it's done in a restaurant with a live audience. I think this is a big plus.

I have been waiting for this DVD for a long time! I spent some time with Steve Dobson just a couple months ago at his house in Washington.
I have never been sooo floored by any other magician. His magic is very special. Sitting at the kitchen table at his house and watching "The Other World Poker Hand" for the 1st time just made my mouth drop. I can't wait any longer! Steve is a very kind and personable individual, and it really shows in his presentation and dedication to magic. He has been through a lot and nothing can hold him down. Please support him and get this DVD. |

Steve has some of the best hands in magic. I really enjoy the fact that Steve takes the time and puts in the extra effort to circumvent, if not alleviate, any of the tells found in moves and routines. We had him lecture for us at the GGG in San Francisco and he was a hit. If you ever get the chance to meet with him, DO IT! If you don't, you'll miss the rare opportunity of being fooled with a pass...and that's a great feeling!

I'm very excited that Steve Dobson finally relented and put out a DVD of his material. The underground finally emerges from below! (Reminds me that the cream always rises to the top.) An artist in every sense of the word.

This is a great DVD with some excellent real world magic on it. Steve Dobson always twists my brain when I watch him perform. All the effects on the DVD are smooth & uncomplicated. Even though I have seen Steve perform & lecture, he still fooled me.
The production is top notch, as always. Mr. Dobson gives up the work on one of his passes, Hermann with a twist. This is a beautiful pass that I think many will want to add to their arsenal. Definitely worth checking out! Mike |

Another DVD I'm surprised hasn't gotten more attention. Steve Dobson is a gifted sleight of hand artist and fantastic teacher. I like him and his magic.
I hope he does more DVD's in the future. |
