The marketing gurus generally state that it costs more to attract new clients than it does to keep and court the old. On a scale of relative importance, where do you guys place the importance of retaining and nurturing relationships with past clients?
For example, I forget who wrote it but I read that it is not the client's job to remember your name...it is your job to keep your name fresh in his memory. To what extremes do you go to accomplish this? Or do you even bother? Do you place more of your business' financial and time resources in keeping old clients or attracting new ones? Please explain your reasons.

Reasons shouldn't be necessary, ANY university marketing course (not the Gurus) will tell you that it is far easier, and less costly to maintain a customer than to seek out, capture, and work with a new one. Most major companies with a sales force can tell you very close to how much a sales call/new customer costs.
What is the total value of one customer to YOU?? In today's business climate and with the amount of info each of is bombarded with on a daily basis, you have to be out there, and in front of your customers constantly. How do I rate an existing client??.....a BIG whoppong 10!!!! (These are the ones that are now booking me up to a year in advance, book an entire years worth of shows with me, and get/give me referrals) How do I do it? Mailings, fax offers, phone calls (social and business), cards, pr events etc. B

I'm with ya, Blair. Just kinda curious on what the general consensus and practice is ...since opinions generally vary greatly among Café guests.
