Addy,
I have found that some recycling centers have phone book collections and are willing to part with a few if you ask nicely. Jon |

Thanks Jon. Between friends and my parent's apartment building I'm set for a while.

Steve is awesome. I haven't got to meet him in person but I've talked to him on his MySpace a couple of times and he's always been really cool and treats everybody like his buddy. He reminds me of the bikers and cowboys I grew up around.
Anybody who wants to work on tearing, bending, and hand strength in general, I highly recommend going to his website and ordering his videos. It's also a good way to help out a real good guy. Quote: On 2008-12-29 12:20, Caveat Lector wrote:

Another place to get phonebooks is to just drop by your phone company that prints them. They always have surplus and it does them a favor for you to take them. Less bulk they have to pay to get rid of.
On a similar topic, if you are interested in tire flipping as an exercise, calling rural tire centers can usually find you a free tractor tire because they don't want to pay to dispose of it either. Then buy Steve's dvd's to learn the proper technique for the feats of strength.

What's tire flipping? I hope it's more involved than it sounds.

Nope, it's exactly what it sounds like. A big truck tire lying on the ground, and the challenge is to lift one side of it up and flip it onto it's opposite side. It's often featured in World's Strongest Man competitions.
Of course, in the UK, it's entirely different: they use a tyre.

Does it include the wheel? And in the UK, they don't use truck tyres either... they use LORRY tyres.
Sorry, but Tractor sounds more manly than lorry.

It's actually pretty much what it sounds like.
You put your forearms deep under one side of a 300-800lb tractor tire and basically do a plyometric deadlift followed by a quick push to flip it. Repeat as many times as possible. It is a popular event in competition strongman and as an exercise it works every muscle in your body. Just make sure you understand body mechanics because it is possible to strain your lower back if it's done wrong. My favorite routine with it is for strength, power, and cardio all at once. What you do is flip it 10 times, rest 10 seconds, flip it 9 times, rest 9 seconds, and so on down to one. Then if you have gas left in the tank you can climb back up the reps. Here's some videos, the first one is a how to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=An1UN2ckMow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGfpnRRzN9w&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiUa67ElQiU&feature=related They also did a lot of it during the training for 300. Do they flip tires on the other side of the road in England?
In addition to McGranahan's dvd's a great resource on grip and wrist training are John Brookfield's books. He's got some great exercises on homemade equipment that he explains how to create on the cheap. |
