Many illusionist or even magicians in general have a story to generate publicity. For example David Copperfield levitating a Ferrari and having the Ferrari almost drop on him and killing him. If you are aware of the method you know that that would not be possible.
I have one I have used on occasion basically about sawing in half and how everyone knows that magic effects are illusions and one time I almost failed at pulling it off properly and almost seriusly injured the person who was being sawed really bad. The second part of the story I use occasionally depending who I am talking to and it goes like this: So I knew I was in trouble and I had to make the split second decision do I Stop the illusion and people will be able3 to see how its done, or do I chance it and keep going in hopes of putting on a hell of a show. Well I chanced it of course! (If you know me personally I would never do such a sthing but my personality is wacky and people just know that I am nuts sometimes and they laugh hysterically but you have to know me personally to understand. Does anyone else out there have any "True" stories they use to generate hype? Does anyone out there have any actually true stories of illusions almost gone wrong or have gone wrong?
Thanks,

I have dropped my zigzag blades on Syd's toe and it hurt, as well as tearing her tshirt by accident with the blade (that was a mall show to never forget, talk about janet jackson). So they can be dangerous especially if you're a klutz like me.

This isn't dangerous but it's pretty funny. When I was doing metamorphosis the asistant got in the bag inside out so the knot was on the inside, The assistant had to help me untie the rope from inside without the audience knowing!

All last season I performed my version of "Through a one inch hole". At the finish of the illusion, the assistant has a rope tied around their middle and winds up secured to the inside floor of the box. The magician reaches in with scissors and cuts the rope to set her free. The very nature of the setup means that the magician doesn't have a very good view of what he's cutting and has to do a lot of it by feel. Well, needless to say, there was once an incident where Paula was in the box, I reached in to cut the rope, and she stood up with a fresh giant hole in her shirt.

Wow! So I am not the only one to have something almost happen. For some reason the gimmick just wouldn't release and it actually started to cut! I finally got it loose

I've appeared facing backwards to the audience on my platform.... One half spin too many by my assistants....
But I saved it by turning around all "cool", as if I "meant to do that"....

I once "sharted" inside of our old subtrunk during the switch... I got food poisoning from the benefit dinner we were performing at...

While doing the sub trunk (early in my career) I stupidly put the keys to the padlocks in my pocket…yes I know, I did it backwards with the girl in the trunk first and me on top of the box ending with her on top and me in the trunk. We were doing an assistants revenge kind of routine at that time.
Anyway, we were performing at a Spring Break event for Miller Brewing Company. When she ended up on top of the box without the keys the guys in the audience went wild with cries of “leave him in”. Fortunately for me, my stage partner at the time was always afraid that something like that would happen so unbeknownst to me, she had gotten in the habit of carrying the duplicate keys in the pocket of her costume. Once again, the magic assistant saved the magician. —Dal Sanders
