Okay, Wise Guys, so I'm one buggy ride away from being Amish...you know I'm not the most tech savvy geek on the planet (no, that's not an oxymoron...geekdom predates the and transcends PC, thank you). Anywho...
I've been on 28k dialup since 1998 or so, patiently waiting for DSL to hit my price point: $39.95/month. That day came...and AT&T had no infrastructure to get the blippin' service here. But patience has paid off, with the infrastructure (that is, corroded lines that were installed in '68) being replaced, and I've now got DSL...for ten bucks a month. And my four year old desk top won't run the software. Technology seems but a treadmill based on endless upgrading and spending...maybe the Amish have it right. I imagine Zeke never gets told by the blacksmith, "Yer old Dobbin's running a little slow, maybe it's time to upgrade... ." |

Old Dobbins would have been off to the glue factory...
Leland, next time there's a buggy going into town get them to take a letter to AT&T help desk to find out what the problem is - those of us with phones and email would of course contact them more immediately. I would assume your problem is easily fixed without any upgrading - service providers tend not to make their product specific to the latest equipment for fear of missing sales to folks with older equipment. My desktop is 5 years old and I know both individuals and businesses using 8 year old desktops with no problems. How limited are your downloads on $10 a month? I'd love to be paying that. My payments average $69 monthly over a 2 year contract but I have unlimited downloads. Destiny |

For the record Leland...I don't give 2 shiites WHAT your ISP says - you DON'T need to install their crappy stupid software to connect to the web with their service.

Hm....dunno about the cap on downloads, but I'm not a gamer, and youtube isn't especially interesting, so I'm not sure it's an issue...yet. Believe it or not, it's a buck a month LESS than my People PC dial-up account was charging.
The techs say Windows 98 support is no longer available, and the software isn't backwards compatible. Just for grins I stuck the CD into the tray and tried installing the software...all I got was a com port reconfigured so my dial-up service no longer detects a modem. This is just craziness...I mean, in almost 24 years of contracting there's stuff that I've been doing the same way all this time just fine, thanks (one example: door knobs from KwikSet get installed the same way they've been put in for at least that long -- no "upgrades" needed). Yeah, I've got new cordless tools and other timesavers that have been introduced to my industry, but it's not like my old sawblades or drillbits aren't "supported by the new architecture." Michael: I hear ya. But I wonder if the modem they sent is proprietary to AT&T, and software is needed to interface with that? |

It is craziness in a world of diminishing resources and hungry people that manufacturers should make anything that will be obsolete so quickly.
I saw this somewhere recently. Quote:
If you've replaced a computer lately--or a cell phone, a camera, a television--chances are, the old one still worked. And chances are even greater that the latest model won't last as long as the one it replaced. Destiny |
