Was curious to hear what thoughts are on doing multiple ropes routines in the same show? Is this overkill? Also, if it IS done, is it best to perform them back to back (the rope segment of the show), or to disperse them throughout the show?
Thanks in advance for your comments and/or advice. |

I often do a C & R rope and a professor's nightmare routine in the same show. I usually split it up with the C & R toward the beginning and the PF toward the end, but I've also seen people combine them or do them together for good effect. If it's entertaining, people aren't going to care if you use ropes, cards, or silks, they'll be happy to be entertained! Best of luck, Jeff

I do PN and C&R in the same show all the time. I spoke to a gentlemen last week who said that he does an all rope street show. How many card manipulators do only card tricks. Pavels junior walking knot, krazy knot, and the krazy knot finish were made to be done as a three rope trick routine. I think the only danger with too much rope magic is when you have your rope routines last longer than five minutes at a time. You need to break up your show with a variety.

Thank you guys for your comments. I should have been more specific in my question. I currently do C&R and PN in every show, but I do it as one routine. The one just flows into the other, so I've always considered it to be one routine. However, I also like and perform Aldo's knotty knot at times, and I'm considering adding Aldo's Missing Link which I've also had for awhile. My question is, is this too much rope stuff for one show?
If I do include all of them, I'm not sure how I would or would not space them out. |

Four rope tricks sounds like a bit much, but I would pay attention to the audience response if I were you.

For me I always feature one rope only in my stage shows. While one rope routine can consist of various moves or short routines combines into 1 act. Although I have many different full routines, I usually perform my Competition Ropes routine which uses my Eternal Rope set. I perform it timed to a piece of music so it easy for me to insert into any part of my show.
As what Al mentioned, the magic should be entertaining therefore if you are entertaining with a piece of rope then you should be fine. However it is good to have variety in a show. |

Absolutely Jeremy, I couldn't agree more. The "trick" is finding the right balance between entertainment and overkill.

I always watch their eyes, and their jaws. How many rope effects do you think Pavel would do? For the record I do two, one in the middle of my show(FO with a ring), and one at the end of my show( C&R), but they last 5 minutes each.

I've done my own rope routine which includes a C&R followed by Ring and Rope routine, always felt that was about as much rope as the audience could take. But Al has it right, if the audience reaction is good, if they are staying with you, keep doing it.

Professor's Nightmare is a classic, If the three ropes become one; a rope through necl adds good variety. I always included Professor Cheers for a touch of comedy. With strong effects, variety and the ability to entertain, you can't go wrong. Old time rope worker R.c. Buff once told me if he knew as a young man , what time had taught him; he would have toured the world doing rope magic.
Well, we can all dream can't we !? Kotah Kotah |

I have been known for doing my take on Tabbarys rope rutine, Pavels Krazzy Knot, Fantastic knot/jumping knot of Pakistan, Dantes rope trick and Prof. Cheers Commedy Rope in one show. Ok so it might be a bit much but if you think about it they are al different effects and the audience doesent seam to mind that I use rope as the tool to make the magic with.
Hay at least it's more fun than Card tricks... or is it...

I will give it a try, and add rope routines to my show to see if the audience really cares. I have about 45 minutes of rope routines that I can do.

It requires and intelligent audience to stay with a good rope routine. With Tabary, there is no distraction or fast moves and the audience is directed to the action slowly.
If the audience is with you, you can take them along. The longest I have done is 18 minutes of rope.

I love this discussion. Thanks guys. I too am going to give it a try and see what the response is. 3 rope routines, over the course of 45 minutes, dispersed throughout should not be that big a deal, but we will see. Afterall, the third routine can always be ditched if needed.

You can also add rings ( solos from a ten inch set) silks & fans if you contemplate doing the cords of fantasia. Performers have so many rope effects to choose from. sinc less is more. Twenty minutes or so of your strongest stuff should be more than suffice. IMO. Take your lead from the advice Al and Ian have offered.

45 minute show...??? wow... You could bill your self as the "King of Ropes" and do an all rope act. Think about the Kellar Tie ala Blackstone with a committee onstage to tie you up. Or the comedy rope tie with you seated and the rope tied around your legs/wrists with the gags covering it with a borrowed jacket ala Bish the Magixh.

Do I need to clarify? I don't do anywhere near 45 minutes of rope magic. Total show is about 45. I would think 3 rope routines would be fine, but agree with you Pete, 1 routine or 10, depends on the magician and the ability to show the audience a good time.
