"One of the unwritten principles of being conservative is (A)making the best of what you’ve been given and (B)not blaming others for what you didn’t get." "To finish that priciple...and (C)working hard for what you want." Corollary: (A) ...while busily looking for ways to grab more; (B) ...unless there's a liberal within pointing range; (C) ...unless you can arrange for cheap, easily-manipulated labor. :innocent:

With some 'Conservatives,' YES; with others, NO. The same would apply to what both you and Stoneunhinged wrote. One thing I definitely DON'T believe is generalizations, positive or negative. Groups or factions are made up of people: gems, crumbs and gradients in-between. Also, what policies are 'good' or 'bad' are subjective to individual values and to the end result. Some Conservatives (and, yes, Liberals) would espouse 'working hard.' Others would espouse 'working smart' (what industry calls the LEAN program). You mentioned Boren; good example of what I'm saying. Another would be Theodore Roosevelt, an arch-progressive and trust-buster under the GOP banner, and W.H. Taft, who continued Theodore's programs. Over the years, I've voted for both Conservatives and Liberals, depending on what I thought the country, state or city needed at that time, usually based on key issues.

I have not knowingly voted for a Liberal, although I have voted for Democrats on a local level, because they were conservative. It’s harder to do so on a national level when the party leaders sound like they got their play book out of the USSR instead of the USA.
I believe in smaller government, defense of our country and the “fair tax” and if a Democrat is for the same thing I will vote for them, my agenda is not bound by party loyalties nor should anyone else’s. You mentioned Theodore Roosevelt; he is a great example of someone that exuded conservative values by being trust-buster, wile at the same time grew government like a liberal. J.F. Kennedy was very conservative, in fact more conservative than any of the last three presidents since Reagan, but look what that got J.F.K...

I agree fully; vote your perception of reality, your conscience, and to achieve the greatest good for all involved, coupled with maintaining civil freedom.

I intended it to read: I think it was L.B.J. that committed thousands of troops overseas to an unpopular military action. J.F.K. cut taxes across the board, not just on the rich, (J.F.K. said that all ships rise with the same tide.), but you got the rest of it right. Are you sure about that, I thought the American Soldiers in Nam during Kennedy were not "there", it was not till L.B.J. took office we openly sent troops and the draft started but I’ve been wrong before. I had class mate that had a crush on Streisand, I could not understand it when she was young, before I was aware of her political views and certainly not now.

Nothing I have said, nor does anything you have said make him a "liberal". It is what he has done with the tax payer’s money that makes him a "liberal" whether you claim him or not. He has also signed more liberal, “pork barrel”, “give to the poor” spending bills and bail outs than did Bill Clinton.

I think you want a "Heinlein conservative." Good luck on that, I can't see any of them going into politics.
