Well, I've just returned from the Day O Magic 7 in Everett, WA.
It was my first real magician gathering. I was quite an experience. I spent a lot of time hiding in a dark corner and observing the other magicians. There was a mister Payne there who reminded me of some friends of mine. He seemed like a pretty cool dude, and he seems to have a lot of experience. The best thing I took away from the event was getting to hear the lecture of and speak to Mr. Reed McClintock. The things he spoke about went so far beyond tricks. He said the kind of stuff I always wanted to hear another magician say. He spoke about psychological principles that were just so advanced and subtle, I don't even know how to convey the experience. If you ever have a chance to see his lecture, do it. I am not kidding when I say that he is completely beyond any other magician I have seen, both technically as well as performance-wise. Speaking of performances. I decided at the last minute to enter their magic contest. I had a pouch of coins with me and they had really pretty trophies and were ecouraging as many people as possible to have a go. I decided to just use one coin. I figured if I could do a routine with just one coin then that would be something the other magicians might find interesting. I was very poorly prepared. Now, the tricks were great. Not to sound arrogant, but on my worst day I am still a heck of a good coin man. The idea of the presentation was decent as well. I structured a production, a few penetrations, and finally a vanish, around a little story about Quantum Physics. The problem was that I came up with the patter while standing behind the curtain. I didn't have it memorized nd struggled with it. So, even though the tricks were top-notch, I didn't leave a magical feeling because I was struggling with my storyline. I knew exactly how I was messing up as soon as I started. One positive is that I recognized the problem and I will learn from that experience. I am supposed to entertain, not just fling tricks. The other positive is that I know my moves are so well rehearsed that my hands will still do them even when I am panicky. The kid that won deserved it. He did Jeff McBride's card routine move for move flawlessly. He segued into that with what was, as far as I know, an original ball routine. He did very well. I hope he sticks with it. Another good experience there, I have discovered that the coin subtlety I created is most likely unique. No one else there had ever seen it, and some of those guys have been around for a long time. I will need to work on the "wow" factor of my moves using it. I also discovered that Anthony's has the best dang oyster shooters in the world. The fresh lemon wedge beside each one was perfect. I had a few problems on the trip, hotels prices, Seattle traffic, trying to find an oyster bar between lectures... But overall I'd say it was worth it. Reed gave me some feedback on my classic palm and was very encouraging. He's overcome a lot in his life and he and his lady are really great people to be around. And did I mention he's a brilliant performer?

Hey Critter,
The next time you are in town, I'll show you some good oyster bars. I have to agree with you about Reed. He's a heckuva nice guy and a brilliant performer. That was my first time attending Day O Magic, too. I heard it may be the last one, but I sure hope not. I enjoyed all the performers there. I thought your coin work was very good! Take care. |
