"The Mentalist" got a good review in today's Daily Variety, and a lukewarm review in the Hollywood Reporter.

It was a lot more enjoyable than I thought it would be. I'll definitely watch the next episode. It had enough humor in it not to take itself too seriously.

I only watched a bout 2 mins of it. didn't care for what little I saw. seems to be too much like the show "Psych" without the comedy

I found it nothing at all like "Psych." It seems to me to be more along the lines of "Burn Notice" with the added drama of a tormented hero. With Patrick Jane's prime nemesis captured in the pilot, it will be interesting to see where the series goes from here.
My wife refers to Jane as a "Spock with a badge and a 'tude." Hmmmmmm...

Throughout the show, Jane kept saying that these murders were copycat murders, and that the letter he received was a fake. The doctor set the whole thing up to divert attention away from himself. At least, that's how I remember it. I expect we'll be hearing more about Red John in future episodes as an underlying theme. Brian |

DOH! That's what I get for answering the wife's question about fashion accessories 3/4s through the show - Of course, that makes much more sense. I thought it was all too easy and all too early. Thanks, Brian. Thank goodness I Tivo'd it for just this circumstance. Whew!

Brian is correct. His nemesis was not captured. The doctor was a copycat.
Anyone watch last night's episode? I like this show more and more. The stories have been decent, and there is just the right amount of humor. I'll keep watching...for now. |

I don't think Patrick Jane is out of the woods, but I think he can prove that it was Red John by the cell phone call to the CBI agent. I bet they will do the first part of next season on Patrick's trial.

Not a bad finale.
The mentalist has got to be a bit like comfort food, predictable, nothing special but enjoyable. Still don't believe that was Red John though...don't think the writers feel they've drawn the last bit of water from that well. The danger always with this kind of hero is that his "cleverness" depends largely on the cleverness of the writers and they seem to have run out of ideas so we get the same tropes every week. Its my constant gripe with Time Travel stories where you and I might wait with baited breathe to see what clever tricks the guy from the future can use in the past...but dream on !!!. In the Time Tunnel our earnest scientists pretty much resorted to their fists to sort things out. Sam Beckett, time travelling genius, stated out with the best of intentions but, when ideas got sparse the writers had him "remember" his martial arts abilities...yeesh. But back to the Mentalist...great fun but a real dearth of Mentalism---maybe they could get Derren Brown in to advise ! |

I suspect that the fat lady still waits silently in the wings regarding Red John's demise.
Red John is Patrick Jane's Moriarty. Holmes without the "Napoleon of Crime" would be as bland as Jane without Red John. I mean, finding R.J. was Jane's whole reason for "tagging along" with the CBI on cases. At first I questioned whether R.J. had screwed up and been caught off guard. But, no. He had his pistol ready and at hand. Red John had planned for this meeting; either to gloat if O'Laughlin succeeded or to confront Jane in either case. Then I figured that he had underestimated Jane's hatred for him and dropped his guard. Nope. R.J. is far too clever and careful a planner for that. Then, I wondered if this was a Red John stand-in, expertly primed to deliver his message to Jane and, if necessary, face the consequences. But, once again, Jane is very adept and ferreting out liars and facades. Still, this course of events was all too easy and neatly packed into a nice beribboned box. Whitford's character may well be Red John - but, don't count him out of the game so readily.

I think that the Producers stretched out the Red John premise as long as they could. I'm sure next season will be about Jane's trial. It won't be a one episode deal. After he proves that his killing was justified, then he will stay on the CBI because he loves the game of catching law breakers. After Spiderman caught his uncles killer, he continue to fight crime. That's what I think Patrick Jane will do.

I haven't seen the Mentalist so I have no idea of what you're talking about but . . .
Years ago, on a lawyer show called The Defenders starring E.G. Marshall and Robert Reed there was a case involving a psychic who shot someone on a bus without provocation. He said he did it because he had the precognition that the man was about to shoot him. Our hero lawyers mount a stirring defense which seems to prove that in fact the defendant was going to be shot by the dead man. As the jury goes out to deliberate, the psychic hands the lawyers a slip of paper. The verdict comes in, and unfortunately for The Defenders, their client is declared guilty by the jury. A few days later one of the lawyers finds the slip of paper--it says "I will be found guilty. The juror vote will be 9-3 on the first round, 10-2 on the second round and then finally 12-0 in the final round declaring me guilty." They check with the jury foreman and of course that's exactly what happened in the sealed juror's room . . . Carry on. I'm just an old man wondering when his son will come home from the prom.

The girl at the Café said that when she went up to him, he was still alive. Maybe, the bodies was switched. They never did show what the killed local businessman looked like. You just assumed it was Bradley Whitford, but I bet that it was someone different and Whitford will show up again later on. |

The show only interest me when Red John is not involved. The whole Red John story line makes me sick and I always feel a bit twisted when I do watch them.
I wish we could have a good detective show like The Mentalist, Castle, Monk or Colombo that solved "The Case of the Stolen Bike" and such. The constant gruesome killings are not the fun part of these shows, the problem solving is. The story lines that deal with torture are a particularly disturbing trend. I know I'm in the minority. I can live with that. -Mary Mowder |
