Great Post Dennis, and I've been spending some time thinking about this recently. I think there are two ideas that are often used interchangeably, but have distinct aspects.

One is character (to me this is more about PERSONALITY) and the other is ROLE (this is more about title or costume). Further, these things are completely independent and can be even plotted on a matrix if you were so inclined.

Examples of ROLEs: Wizard, Traditional (Tux clad) Magician, Construction Worker, Police Officer, Pirate, etc.

Examples of CHARACTERs (though these are thin and shallow, a REAL character would be much more richly defined by the performer): bumbling and silly, childlike, excited and passionate, serious and debonaire, self-important and overly egotistical in a humorous way, dark and mysterious, regular everyday guy, etc.

So you could have a wizard who was bumbling and silly, or serious and debonaire, or dark and mysterious. You could have a Pirate who was dark and mysterious (like dread pirate Roberts from "The Princess Bride") or a pirate who was self-important and egotistical in a humorous way (like Jack Sparrow...sort of), or any other combination.

And as your "Character" develops deeper and richer personality traits your overall performance becomes more unique and powerful.

That's my take on it anyway.

Julian,

Nice to see you are OK after that hurricane. Yes, I agree with your analogy.

Character is all those little things that make up the person, and the role is a much better term.

Thanks for clarifying that.

Payne, you never fail to amaze ! Wonderful costumes.

Tony, I have a friend down here who performs regularly as
"Billy Bob, the Trailer Trash Magician". He works with Budweiser playing cards while wearing Nascar shirts, pretending to chew Skoal, etc. He has truly realized the red-neck magician, and even won a competition with this act at the IBM in Miami awhile back. He is doing three shows today to benefit the local Shakespeares on the Green company. Talk about two worlds colliding !

I also perform shows as

  • a construction worker
  • a painter/artist
  • a spy or secret agent (James Munton performs like this as well)
  • a beach bum (shorts, Hawaiian shirt, sandals, straw hat, plastic lei)
  • a train conductor
  • a sports coach

and I remember a few people performing as a referee including Todd McKinney and others.

This is getting to be quite a list!

Since the 1980s I've performed 99% of my family shows as "Turk the Magic Genie."

Why not simply portray yourself?

Where do you guys get your costumes? Online? Thrift shops? Theatrical houses?

The only things I seem to find are cheap Halloween costumes. Where do you find quality costumes, particularly period outfits?

And while I am asking, I had an old friend ask if I wanted to perform at a Renaissance dinner. I would only do this because he's an old college friend, as the pay is VERY little (probably $200.) He said any Medieval look is fine and did not have to look authentic. Anyone know a cheap way to look Medieval?

A comedy court jester outfit, made out of balloons. You'll get loads of mileage out of having the odd balloon pop, and having to fix your costume,. ,.hey, I might even trty that myself!

I am surprised at how many people are portraying a construction worker...

I had several characters in mind to do such as a construction worker, a cowboy, an indian, a police officer, a motorcycle dude, and a Navy guy... But I heard some guys in Greenwich Village in New York had stole my idea and were already doing the same schtick, so I gave them all up...

Some people...
