Ho, hum, he's at it again already? Still haven't gotten over his fake stunt on Oprah.
Now he's gonna hang upside down for 60 hours? Gosh, I don't think I could stand the excitement. Basically, he does the "same trick" over and over again, year after year. I will lie down and do nothing. I will stand in a make pretend ice cube and do nothing. I will stand on a tower and do nothing. I will sit in a glass box and do nothing. Now, I will hang upside down and do nothing. Interestingly, New York City is probably the only city in the country that it will work and people will show up to watch. New Yorkers are perplexed at the mere concept that someone could do nothing for so many hours. If he tried his stunts in other cities, he'd be ignored. |

Asianmagic,
You may not personally find David Blaine's endurance stunts fascinating or interesting, but you cannot deny that the public does. The media eats it up and people are fascinated, otherwise ABC (a major television network, not cable as in Criss' case) wouldn't give him 2-hour tv specials. I personally think it's great. Houdini would be proud. People in other cities wouldn't come out to see him? Well, they came out in droves in London. Granted, many came to jeer, but there was also a lot of support. But whether they came to cheer or curse him is irrelevant. They came, and that's all that mattered. Now, regarding the Oprah Winfrey piece, I do not understand why you are insisting it was false. It absolutely was not. Guiness was there to verify and record the event for their records. Do not assume that simply because something has never been done, or someone has said that it can't be done, that it cannot. That's the kind of thinking that will hold you back. If David had thought the same way, he would certainly not have achieved his goal.

I must say that I may not appreciate David's chosen style of performance, but that is ok. Everyone has their own style. However, I have to admire his determination and his ability to use the media to his advantage. My only fear is that the networks are starting to see him more as a stunt man (like Evil Knievel) and not so much as a magician. I will look forward to seeing the special this week to see how it is filmed and what gets aired.

And, for the record, Asianmagic, Blaine's breath-holding record was just broken by a German named Tom Sietas who went for 17 minutes and 19 seconds.
So, do you think that he faked it, too? And that his fake record beat the previous fake record?

It is only for his promo, and we speak about him . So it is a success for this point.
If it can help him to continue to be well known ( there is Criss angel and new commers at TV) m, and if it helps him to have contacts and lot people in his shows, why not? Houdini used this method with success, and Copperfield same with Mega illusions . And it is often different than their real stage performances, but perfect for publicity. |

I really don't care for this endurance stuff at all. Could I do it? No. Would I want to? No, I have better things to do. I actually do plan to watch though as I'm always asked at a gig. Dan White, one of his consultants was just on a magic podcast saying that they're returning to more "traditional" magic used on this special. Funny how that sounds like they've used some "camera enhancement" before, even by their own admission. But worse than the stunt, or even taking advantage of the camera is the monotonous droning of that voice. Can we PLEASE chip in and buy this guy a personality?

Regardless of what people think of DB, I have to give him a lot of credit. I have hung by feet on a few occasions, I think the longest was about 19 minutes and the pain in my legs was very excruciating not too mention that it felt like my head was going to explode.
All I can say is: better him than me. Good luck DB |

I hear a lot of talk about David Blaine not having a personality. I simply disagree. I think he's very personable. Yes, he's very low-key, but that's who he is. And his approach works wonderfully for the type of magic that he performs. Is he David Copperfield or Tommy Wonder or Al Goshman? Of course not, nor is he trying to be. He has created a very specific kind of character rooted in himself. He explained that he and Paul Harris spent some time determining what his character should be.
Criss Angel, for example, has a very overt "personality" and, in my humble opinion, is nowhere near as intriguing or interesting or appealing of a performer as David Blaine. And even with David only appearing on television once a year (or sometime 2 years) he is much more of a star than Angel. I think he's great for magic. Always have.

My biggest interest for watching this week will be simply to see just how his special is edited and aired for TV. The last one was horrible in the sense that it clearly showed the network's aim at billing him as a stunt man of sorts. The way it was filmed and edited reminded me so much of a motorcycle jump or something of that sort. I am hoping that he has gianed a bit more control over the special to try and bring it back more to the magic that he did in the first 2 specials.

I think David Blaine is one of the all time best close-up performers. The reactions he gets from doing simple card tricks are better than Criss Angel's extravagant effects. We all get good reactions, but has anyone been able to get the same reactions that Blaine has been able to get just by doing an ACR or Balducci? Even though Blaine is dry, that's part of his persona, and he has mastered the mysterious guy who does magic effortlessly persona. He knows how to capture the moment of astonishment better than nearly all, if not all, magicians out there, and some may argue that the goal of the magician is to astonish their spectators. Point is, David Blaine is an outstanding performer and really makes people believe in magic.
Unleashing the moment of astonishment, one impromptu situation at a time.

Nothing personal here at all but I totally disagree with the above post by Palmtreemagic. Personally, I do not feel David is even remotely close to being considered the best close-up performer out there. is he good at what he does? sure he is good. Fact is there are far more out there way better with much better skill and presentations then David.
The reason it appears this way is quite simple. If you are given a TV production crew and a set of cameras and a huge editing room and post production dept., I can gaurentee you that a LOT of magicians would be able to get the same reactions he gets. The point is you are only seeing what gets aired and what he wants you to see. You are not seeing all the footage that ended up on the cutting room floor. Give any good close up performer a camera and the same set ups as David has, and I can tell you they will be able to produce those reactions and even better ones. Another point is this. If you are out there doing close-up magic and a lay person sees a TV camera and a network film crew, do you think that may influence their reactions just a bit? Absolutely. If they want to get on tv, they know their best chance is to react favorably to what they are seeing. Has anyone been able to get his type of reactions? Once again my answer is yes. I have seen it time and again from some top names in close-up magic. If you went to the combined convention this year you would have seen some of this. There are some people doing absolutely amazing stuff and giving audiences not only wow reactions but a full entertainment experience. I have no problems with his personna as that works and fits for him. I personally do not like that style, but that is just me. What I admire about David is not his magic. I admire him for his amazing ability to use the media and PR machine in his favor. He is very good at that. I also do not feel he "knows how to capture the moment of astonishment better then nearly all, if not all, magicians out there". He can wow you for sure. But for me there are others that can do the same thing better. There are also others who realize that you can give the audience so much more then just this "wow" experience. There are great close-up performers who give you a full array of emotions and really give you a full experience. Just my thoughts. Kyle

I hope it is also. I just will wait and see how it gets edited for TV. I am hoping it has a better balnce of the magic versus the endurance stunt.

Does anyone remember the interview that Blaine did with Max Maven a few years back at Magic Live?? I'm not sure what he was on that day .. but, he was disrespectful to all who attended. Slouched in his seat, mumbling in the mic and he even compared himself to a modern day Jesus Christ. I really lost all respect for him then and there.
Maybe he was just having a bad day .. or a bad trip. Was I the only one that remembers that painful experience?? Steve |
