You speak the truth. I design illusions, do I want them revealed by MM of course not, but if he did I won't get to upset about it, because I will use it to my advantage. Anyways there obviously lots of different views on this. We will st have to watch and see what happens. |

Exactly! Here is some food for thought! A friend of mine was talking with some friends and they decided to take an illusion and turn it on its side, it works the same but they change the shape a bit and now it looks like a different illusion something 'new' I wish I could show it or tell you which one but then I would be doing too much work for you right? LOL We are magicians we think outside the box so take it and think!

Even if DC lied it is okay he dismissed the MM with ease. He is still packing the house. As much as I don't care for the man, DC has a way of bringing his audience into the story he tells as he performs. That is why he is considered the Master Magician. BYUDAD |

Joe,
A great and needless reply. It is always the amatuers who scream the loudest. A shame really. As they don't pay anyone's wages. If I buy a Ferrari that has untold speeding tickets...them what? Suppose to return it? Illusions and magic will always be duplicated. Not fair but a reality. I buy illusions and if they are first rate then my concerns are not if they even ownen it. Vague but that's reality. The exporsures? I loathe. Can't do anything about them but join Zaney Blaney and just give them additional press. Or even worrse write the networks and give them more power. It's how they are performed. NOT why. gene |

Best way to change a thing like this is to approach it by asking what you CAN do about it.
From the point of view of public perception... People have short memories. They might remember having seen an exposure, but they're likely a little sketchy regarding how it's done. If you change just one little thing in presentation (or, if the paint job's different), they'll be even more confused. And, if an audience member says, "What do you think about the Masked Magician?" don't respond angrily. Say, with a laugh, "Oh, THAT guy! Clueless! Terrible, isn't he?" This helps to shed doubt on the validity of his exposure. An angry response only shows the questioner that Valentino and his bunch got to you...which tells the questioner that his exposure was accurate. Now...if you really, really want to stop these shows, there's only one way to do that...but it would be difficult to pull off. Maybe impossible. It would require a huge amount of organization 'mongst all magicians. I don't know how. Maybe through the local clubs. Tough to do...but not impossible. When solving this sort of problem, ask yourself WHY the problem continues. Because people like watching these shows? Okay. But how does the network know that? Osmosis through the TV screen? |

Okay...
Fox keeps a show like that on the air and in repeats in THIS country (The U.S.) because of the Nielsen ratings. Less than one-tenth of one percent of United States viewers are provided, by the Nielsen company, with "diaries" during sweeps weeks. There are also people-meters used--machines plugged into televisions automatically recording programs--but the diaries are the main thing. Ratings for TV shows come from this tiny percentage of people with diaries. There must be something similar in other countries as well. Time to find out, maybe? So...for a few weeks, twice a year (used to be...probably still is just twice a year), people with diaries watch television, and then tell Nielsen what they're watching. Based on THAT, TV broadcasters who "buy the book" (pay incredible amounts of money to purchase the data) either raise or lower their advertising fees. If a certain number of diaries note that the household has watched the MM, that tiny percentage is extrapolated to millions of viewers. If the number is high enough, the show is a "hit," advertising fees on the show jump up, and the network is happy. But if the diaries don't mention the show, then the extrapolation goes way, way down, instead...and the money the network can collect for advertising within the show plummets. And the show goes away. Now... The very difficult trick would be to influence the people with diaries...and do it in a subtle manner. You see, diary holders aren't supposed to tell you who they are. And here's something else...though they're SUPPOSED to mark their diaries every day for every show...they generally don't. They generally wait until the end of the time they have the diaries and fill everything in. And (and here's a dishonest part, but I'm throwing it out there, anyway), if they don't have a people-meter on their set (and most don't. The diaries are the thing), they could watch "The World's Stupidest Videos," but write in the diary that they were watching "Masterpiece Theatre." It would take a monumental effort to have an effect this way. But it's not impossible. I'm not sure it's worth it. But it IS a solution. Me, I'll just keep laughin' when people ask. Whaddya think? -Philip |

I thought the neilsons ratings were compiled through electronic means... A box connected to your television that monitors what you are watching. You do not actually have to fill a "diary" anymore...
Of course I could be wrong... |

Still have to do the diary thing. The boxes are few and far between.
I was even sent one a few years back and had to call 'em and say, "No thanks," because I'm in the media. |

Servante I think you need to dig just a little deeper. Nielson ratings lead to advertising. I think it would be easier to go after the companies doing the advertising like it was once done. Some dropped the show others ate it up for the publicity.
Only having magicians is not big enough, now if we could get a union involved (screen writers guild or actors guild) that would probably have more of an impact. I agree that most people won't remember what they saw after a short time. Still doesn't help promote our craft.

There are always going to be advertisers who will step in to buy the time if the ratings are good.
