David Blaine will be performing Carl Skenes' Bullet Catch. It is slightly modified for David. http://www.joejesse.com/blaineskenes.html

Enjoy.

Criss Angel roughly did the exact same thing on Mindfreak. It never actually aired in its entirety. But there was a small clip of it in the opening montage of MindFreak season 1.

Looks like Blaine is copying Angel yet again. Angel performed Submerged. Then Blaine Drowned Alive. Now this.

Blaine copying Angel? How so? If you look at it that way, Angel copied every magician before him doing the bullet catch. No one is copying anything. Not Angel or Blaine.

Actually Blaine is copying. As Angel put a titanium container in his mouth to catch the bullet. Haven't seen the special yet but as it Skenes' it will be the same.

It's the way Skenes, Angel, and Blaine catch the bullet all in a bullet proof container placed in the mouth.

So, unless you are someone like Jerry Andrus, who only performed effects they created , you are copying? No room for differences in presentation? Adding your own handling to a similar effect? Putting a well know effect in a unique setting? I watched a bizzarist perform for a room full of magicians and fooled them using very old and well known techniques because of the way he presented it. Was he a copy-cat?
I can't say I agree.

For the record, magician Dorothy Dietrich in her presentation of the bullet catch she caught a bullet in a metal cup well before both Criss Angel and David Blaine, and at about the same time as Skenes, probably a bit after.

I believe the bullet catch was originally done with a metal cup, that is, oh so long ago.

Please check history books before claiming originality to the guy who copied the KISS make-up, the Blaine performance style (now often switched for the "cool" new Brown approach), the Copperfield stunt, and pretty much everything else besides the word "MindFreak"- which means absolutely nothing.

Good evening Mr. Brooks.
The evening I was referring to about a bizzarist fooling magicians was an event both you and Ms. Dietrich were attending.
I learned a great deal that night.
Context and presentation are very powerful.

Alex..
Please qualify where you get the concept that the bullet catch was originally done with a metal cup. I believe it was done first with a plate, and than in the teeth, possibly in the hand. Then by Skenes and Dorothy Dietrich in a metal cup well before Angel or Blaine.

And then of course, to the audience, does this matter? The question should be "were they entertained?" I'm guessing they were.

Actually Skenes did it in a metal box and Dorothy Dietrich did it in a metal cup and then so did David Blaine. Not sure what Criss Angel did as it never hit the real world as the others did.

When I watched th special I thought, was it supposed to be a stunt, a trick, etc. I heard similar reactions from laymen. It hardly ssemed like a bullet catch, it seemed more like something Mythbusters would do. It was not amazing IMO because David was not catching a bullet due to speedy reactions or whatever, he caught it because of scientific precision, or what have you. Not very amazing. Just my opinion.

Yeah...But stand in front of a man with a gun aimed at your mouth. I am not so sure I would like to be the one who gets it wrong.
