Chance, You just got to buy this one!
I mean I hate to reward the slug with cash but this piece of crap he made is too funny. Who in there right mind would buy it when they have seen the Original. You would always have a good story sitting on your shelf with this one! Brad

Maybe the rip-off artist took to heart that he wanted something that had "already been chewed" - but my goodness, to spit it out and sell it on ebay?!!?... Pass me a torch too. . .

It might be worth $65 to Chance to get this thing off the market (as well as to display it as a monument to utter crappiness) but, then again, making the sale might encourage the guy to make another one. But, according to the auction, he only ships to Germany. I'll bet he would soil himself if Chance contacted him to "inquire" about it.

Bob,
Thanks for the translation of his shipping terms. I would love to buy this pile o junk. It would make for good laughs in the shop. Now I gotta find a friend in Germany to buy it then I will buy it from him. I think it would be a kick to email the seller. I will give it a shot Thanks Chance

Sorry guys,
but your presumptions are completely wrong. I am the seller at the ebay auction. But of course, I am NOT the manufacturer. I bought this fantasta a few years ago at a magic share market at Haan/Dusseldorf. So please feel free to adjudge the origin ripper, but that's not me. I am just closing my collection of magic props... And of course I own just one of these rip offs... |

Shado,
I can understand your situation however, can you answer one question honestly? Did you know that this was a pathetic imitation/copy of my prop? If not, then you are free and clear of any verbal bashings that may come about in the Magic Café. If you did know...then you may not be given much mercy. As you may have discovered, I am the creator of the ABC Gumball ReCombobulator which is the prop you are selling is a clear attempt at ripping off my design. Am I that worried about it? Look at my posts above. Not really. Just as long as they are not produced commercially (anymore than 1 unit) Some folks may be surprised at my following statement. I really don't mind if someone attempts to make their own version of my props. The truth is, I cannot stop these people as they will do it anyway. Like I said, it is not worth getting my gumballs in a wad. I think they will discover, in the end, that what I do is MUCH harder than it looks and end up with what you are selling. So, can I buy this for my collection? If so, what would the shipping fees be to the USA (in US Funds) Welcome to the Café Chance Wolf Creator of Wacky Wolf Productions An Honorary Member of the "You Have Just Been Hacked Society"

Chance Wolf,
I don't know that you were the originator of that gumball machine and that I bought a ripp off. And of course, a few years ago (2004, 2005) this prop was complete new in germany, itwas not carried in any german store and there were no ads in any magic magazine. BTW: I understand your intention and your discontent. And I am happy that you understand, that this ripp of is not my fault. I hope, the others can understand that my intention at ebay is only to clear my basement an not to damage anybody ! Shipping fees to the USA is about 45 dollars (=32 EUR) |

Shado,
OK, Sounds fair and I hope the others will follow my lead and let this go. I will keep my eye on the auction and might actually buy this prop... just to get it out of the mainstream and place it on my shelf as a historical piece. Thanks for your honesty. Chance

To say that Chance is a gentleman about this is a definite understatement. If I was in his situation I would hope that I would be able to act with this type of integrity. I think that having this knock off would be great and I would hope that Chance is able to buy this without others bidding on it.
It would be quite telling to have photos of the two props (original v. knock off) side by side. I think doing something like this would show people the difference between another "junky" magic box and something that not only works but can be appreciated as a true collectible. Then again Chance may just want add some fireworks to it and just watch it go boom. jeff |

Chance's approach is exactly right, I think. After all, if someone just made ONE of these, it was a lot of work, and as Chance says, came out looking awful....I'm pleased that you feel flattered, Chance!
At the end of the day, if someone decides to make ONE copy of a magic prop for their own use, it's pretty much impossible to stop them. In my opinion, it's OK to do that too, as long as the "performer" is mainly a hobbyist. If a prop like this makes its way to a few church fetes and private parties, that would seem appropriate. But of course, if we're talking about a professional entertainer, then one would have to ask "why?", when you can buy the real thing for just a few hundred dollars..... I'd be interested to know how others feel about the ethics in this situation? Potty |

Potty,
That's a tough one. I know that I was in this situation a while back when I purchased a floating table. At that time I didn't know about the whole Losander/Tommy Wonder issue and when I did I felt uncomfortable about it. Coincidentally, the table, like this ABC copy, also came from Germany. Once I knew that the prop wasn't the original I purchased a real Losander table. I guess buying this kind of prop comes down to a personal decision and since it's a one off perhaps that's acceptable. I don't want to impose my judegement on others and perhaps my previous post where I joked about "angry villagers" was premature. I'm happy to take this Ebay seller at his word and can understand his position. I think that it's nice that he's come to the Café in order to set the record straight. However, it does beg the question is there other copies of the ABC floating around in Germany or Europe? Perhaps, one of the English Lords can let us know about that. jeff |

Chance will remember this, but a couple years ago, there was a Lefler-style table for sale on ebay with a Wolf-like angular twist on it. That's the only one of those I've ever seen, and while not a direct copy of anything on the market, you could certainly tell what the maker was going for in his design. Chance took that in stride as well.

I do have a Wacky Side Table and I've taken this style and added other pieces that complement the table so that my stage has a unified look to it. I have a 10 second Charvet Table and of course this is a black ATA styled case. Obviously this table doesn't match at all. As my main show is about reading I have a friend who does sets/props for theatre/film and she is making me a 3 sided facade to cover the Charvet table and that would match the Wacky Side Table. I asked her to do a kind of Alice in Wonderland thing. It's nearly done and I haven't seen it but I've been told by my teaching partner (her husband) that she's made it up to look like a "wacky" book case full of books. He's told me some of the details. That she's cut old hard cover books vertically about 2-3" from the spine and has attached them to the front of the table facade. She's also created two small openings so that my Mackie sound system and bubble machine would fit. I'm very excited about getting it but don't want to pressure or rush her as she can get quite busy. Hopefully soon and I can post the pictures to see what folks say. jeff |
