Hi,
Today was the first time I performed some mentalism to a believer. I saw that it was more interesting (funnier) to perform to a non believer rather than to someone that believes... Someone shares this opinion? SM |

It's certainly amusing the watch a skeptic become... well, less skeptical.

I have fun all around and find most performances interesting. I don't like performing for ********.

SM, I think I know what you mean. While taking a break from performing at a "natural health" trade show (lots of "earthy people" there), I did a test run of a new billet technique and told a nice middle aged lady (definitely a believer) the word she was thinking of. Without batting an eye she simply said that I was correct and that was it. I obviously "had it" as she said. What I had done was completely within the realm of possibility in her world; it was a terrible let down!

I watched Derren Brown's MESSIAH (filmed in USA) again the other night. It reminded me just how uncomfortable I felt the first time round in realising that performing to believers carries an immense responsibility. But this time I also 'got it' when I realised that that responsiblity also carries over to non-believers.
The show itself, whilst great for TV, left me a little cold, dissappointed, and embarrassed. This time round I thought 'so what'? I mean why prove what we already know? That being that any magician (with talent) can seemingly do the impossible if he couches his performance in mentalism. But I think is was the bit of making fools of people along the way that really dissappointed me. I don't think that's what we're supposed do. AND, purely from a philosophical argument, just because I con you into thinking that I'M psychic, doesn't mean that psychic-ism does not exist. bobser

I know what you mean-It can get a bit pesky when people believe you are the real thing and want to know why their knee is hurting.-However there is an energy connecting all things and our best physics now allows for this phenomena.Separation and reality as you know it are illusion folks..

I love hearing a skeptic say, "Okayyy...I am now officially weirded out..."

Performing strong mentalism for skeptics and science-types always has a bigger psychological payoff for me over performing for the unduly credulous, whom I tend to be cautious around so as not to harm them by increasing their undue credulity.
A scientist says: wow, that is amazing; your art astounds. A believer says: now that you have proven that you have real supernatural abilities, will you provide supernatural guidance regarding the temporal problems I face in my life, or supernatural healing with my natural medical problems, etc. And so I would rather educate the credulous to be skeptical as a kind of intellectual self-defense from the unscrupulous, and be paid to entertain the educated. Some mentalists get so turned on from the act of seeming supernatural that they want to induce deeply held belief in their supposed supernatural abilities. It appeals to their worst vanities and grandiosity. To me, that is the highest form of immature self-aggrandizement.

I had just done the UFO card- not exactly mentalism, though it's got some nice PK effects that could be applied. Now, I realized that when I was doing the really cool stuff, no one paid attention; so I did just a simple flip with the card. But I held it floating juuuuust a little tiny while longer than what a normal person can do (without making it too fantastic)... I also started adding real genuine flips and would let the card get away from me once in a while... and suddenly everyone was watching the UFO card. And I kept getting people amazed. Actually, there's an article that this post reminds me of; It's actually from Silly Billy's book; and it relates to how kids may not know how things work, but even fantastic things can seem mundane if you get used to it. Kid's see a dove pan and they suddenly realize fire will come out, and they'll suddenly get candy. Ok, so it's a magic candy making pan. Once you see enough shows with that fancy looking pan, you assume it's going to give you candy. His article, in my opinion, was a little more about making things look recognizable, and then creating the magic within that normal looking item. Then they realize that something fantastic is happening coming from something that "just doesn't do that." And then it becomes "magical" again. However, it still has some connection with what we all are discussing in that we have to work with expectations and somehow change them. So you think I'm a mind reader, and I just duplicated your drawing. So what? But if I've convinced you that I could shut these powers off, or that I wasn't doing a trick and it WAS completely random, then it may be more impressive. |

A similar response I have gotten is someone humming the 'Twilight Zone' theme.

There are people who do this stuff for real on the Café and others like myself who are entertainers. I sometimes wish I could do it for real but then again, a big responsibility it would require.
