Imagine what our brethren magicians faces hundreds of years ago... Makes you wonder how magic was even done back then, and why people STILL had the drive to perform magic, even in the dark days of the past!

Sometimes I think that people here at the Café like to see themselves as part of a very ancient tradition, when in fact they go no deeper than to learn a kind of magic that is in fact totally modern. Further: they would probably find the magician of 500 years ago to be ethically problematic, because he probably was grifting as much as entertaining, and he probably NEVER gave a disclaimer.... |

In Mexico they not only have black magic and white magic, but also have red magic, so I was told. I don't get what Red magic is about though. I mean white magic is about doing good stuff and black magic is about doing bad stuff, like putting curses on people etc but what is Red magic about?
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Every autograph request is an attempt at sorcery
Every candle lit on that birthday cake is an attempt at sorcery. Every appeal to (powers unnamed) is an attempt at sorcery. Every time we adjudge a lie as "white" we are using sorcery. Every time we adjudge motives as having greater weight than personal and physical outcomes we are appealing to dark powers to annul the real and replace it with compliance to our will. Perhaps it is time for some to look in the mirror.

I knew someone from Haiti who asked me of what I was doing was voodoo or just trickery. He then told me about some of the fantastic things he claimed to have witnessed.

In the end of it all, the color of the magic is meaningless. It is something that some sects who practice magick assign to feel better about their work. Magick should really be a self serving endeavor born of the wizard for whatever purposes suit his needs. The idea of white vs black is borne out of the idea of good and evil, which is quite subjective. In the spirit of the discussion of this thread, many of the type of people the OP is asking about could potentially view what we do when we do magic as being magick, which to many is considered evil.

If the catholic church (other Christians maybe?) did not believe in black magic, demons, succubus, etc., would they have official exorcists?
This, by the way, would form a very nice hook for a patter...
