I have been obsessed with magic stands for some time. I currently use a portable plastic legal box (with wheels), on top of it which I place a 4 piece plastic drawer set (which has a nice top on it to perform on), and cover the whole front up with a Halloween black velvet cape. I can open the back drawers up during the show, and take props out and put them back. Problem with it- it is kinda bulky and heavy, I use bungee cords to strap it all together. But it is good in the rain, keeps everything safe and dry.
Jeff McBride says if you do solo kids shows, you really should be able to take everything back to the car or van in one trip (to avoid kids messing with your stuff while away). I have a lot of prop stuff, not really clever enough to do an entire kids show out of a small suitcase that guys like Barry Mitchell do so well. Today at Lowe's (9-29-08), they had on sale for #14.99 a "Gear Box" black rolling organizer (designed for college dorm rooms as a storage unit), number 50-650P, Lowe's 102753 I/O Dorm Cart. This is almost half off. I got three of them for $47.67, including tax. I plan to use two for programs, keep one as a spare. These organizers are small enough that I can place them both on my little portable cart (available for about $72.99 from Office Depot), and stick with the "one trip" principle. This is a very cool complete canvas type black storage tower on four wheels with all kinds of inside shelves and lots of outside pockets. Can probably use without a velvet cover even, looks ok as is, amazing for a magic show prop table. It is 14 inches wide by 14 inches deep by 45 inches high. It is fairly sturdy, and the only draw back is the back shelves are "open" which I will probably cover with one of my velvet capes when transporting it shelf side up. It does not collapse once assembled, you would have to redo it for that. But I store my props in the table, I do not remove them after a show. The good news, the complete tower is very light, and with two of them, you have two fairly large performing surfaces and literally a ton of storage shelves, pockets, and other places to put everything easily except maybe very large illusions. I'm sure it will hold my "InstaStand" too easily. I am going to try to hang my ipod player in one of the side pockets, see if that will work for my music (which I operate with a remote). So, if you do not do a lot of shows like myself (I have a day job as an attorney), and maybe only do a few shows a month, this is a pretty nifty little storage unit that can double as a stage or classroom performance table using the top of it. You literally could put your props back and not have to move them again until the next program. So if you a driving by a Lowe's, check it out, well worth the $14.99, even just to store magic props in your magic room without ever using it using it for an actual program. The rolling unit does fit in the back seat of my Chevrolet Cavalier. For $14.99 plus tax, in my view, you can't lose. Roger The Magic Bus http://www.ChristianMagician.org |

Thanks for that Roger I'll have to acquire one next time I'm in the States. How about some pics? (Will it be on the next video clips??)
Here though they're four times more expensive (but still relatively cheap for a 45" unit)

We finishing filming just last week for the new Gospel Magic! series, my current plastic shelves/tower table is used on it when I did the "Meta-Morpho" Spots trick. My goofy routine for this has me getting a "Cheetos" cheesy stain (from the snack food) by mistake onto the white silk. I then try to get out the stain out by using spray magic spot remover, but I apparently used too much as the spots leave the can and go onto the silks! This is the "premise" I use for the can losing its spots- the "magician in trouble" theory. These new Gospel Magic! programs (probably about 5 of them) will be posted to http://www.ChristianMagician.org in late October sometime. The new series is going to be absolutely terrific- features Duane Laflin, Brad Brown, David Ginn, MagicBob, SuZie, PJWeber, Leo Craven, Alan Kazam and Roger The Magic Bus (me). Wow. So we will be showing it on 5 local cable systems in SW Michigan. Thanks again for your kind words, Roger from http://www.ChristianMagician.org

The Lowe's store in Kalamazoo had it on sale today, 9-29-08 for $14.99. To see a picture of this product, go to http://www.amazon.com, when you get to that website, put in the words "Home and Garden" in the search box. When you get to that section, type in the words "Richards Homeware". Then go to page 6, item number 137. The black tower is listed there on sale for $39.99. My guess is lots of stores may carry it. Wow, I guess I got a really good deal today at Lowe's! The product itself (which also can act as a portable magic table tower) is called a gear box multi use rolling organizer and is distributed by Richards Homewares out of Portland, Oregon, which distributes all kinds of storage items, bins, etc. manufactured in China mostly is my guess.

Whoops, type in the words Richards Homewares once you get to the Home and Garden section of Amazon.com. It is item 137 on page 6. A little black storage tower with lots of side pockets.

Just keep clicking on "larger image", you will get a nice, big picture of this little storage unit. I probably won't use all the outside side bags. Looks like Target may carry it also.

I got an email today 9-30-08 from Alan Kazam, a professional magician from Kalamazoo. He bought one of the tables from Lowe's for $14.99, is using it tomorrow for his table hopping at a local restaurant. Neato! I suggested to Alan he may want to consider doing two things. First, when you put the stand in the car back seat, shelf side up, the shelf "bag" and side bags tend to flop downward, and slide out of the steel frame. This is not good. Solution: attach large, black binder clips to the back steel frame (I used two per side)and attach it to the hanging bag and side bangs. Works terrific- solidifies the entire unit so it is much more stable. I also took out the steel clips "pinchers" once attached, so the clips barely show now. I think Office Max, Office Depot sells them under the Acco brand. The ones I used were from Quill Office Supplies, Large Binder Clips, recorder number 7-21000, 1" capacity, 2 inches long by 1 inch wide. They work perfect, wrap around the steel support frame yet securely attach the hanging bags to the cart frame so it doesn't move around. Second thing I suggested was Alan may want to velco a hanging cloth to the back open side of the cart if he is worried about other people from other tables looking at his props inside the cart. So, if you can find them on sale at Lowe's or Target, you can with the price of the steel clips have a very nice portable magic stand on wheels for less than $20 total. The only downside is if you want to disassemble the cart, you would have to unscrew the support bolts. I plan to keep my intact- I put two of the carts fully assembled stacked on top of each other into the back seat of my 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier. Wow!

Very good idea, Roger! On my page it was item 139, called the Multipurpose Storage Cart - Black, unless I'm mistaken.
Anyhow it looks excellent. I'll definitely go by Lowe's to look at one to get a better idea of the height and dimensions and things. Great find, thanks a lot!

I looked at the Lowe's website for the cart but no luck. Finally, I drove to Lowe's with a picture from Amazon. Asked three associates about it & got blank faces. A fourth employee pointed me in the right direction & I found the cart in a floor display in the household storage. The cart is really well constructed & fairly easy to assemble. Now I've got a home for all my gear & I can use the shelf space for ???. This is a great buy. Thanks for the tip, MagicBus.

You are welcome. Yep, I found it at Lowe's in Kalamazoo in the same aisle where all the large plastic storage containers are on display. Again, I would encourage you to buy some black Large Binder Clips (2 inches wide)to secure the hanging bag portions to the steel frame. Makes it much easier to transport I found out. Am eager to use it, I bought three!

Does anyone have a Lowe's sku (item) number for this thing? I've checked at all the area Lowe's around me, and no luck. Thanks!

Target may have them also. At Lowe's in Kalamazoo, the rolling black "Gear Box" storage cart(perfect for dorms! it says on the box)on theirfloor display is apparently distibuted by Richards Homewares out of Oregon. It was in the same aisle where all the large plastic storage containers are. Good Luck, hope you can use it. See my similar note in the "tables/accessories" section of The Magic Café for more comments on it.

If you'd like information about a very light SIDE table, and one that is very compact, I recommend highly the "insTand" at http://www.instand.com. Made in the USA. The flat, rubberized type table top is about 11 by 13 inches, and securely fits on a 22 ounce folding table base. Perfect for holding lighter objects like silks, large cards, the Laflin "dump box", etc.. It is also sold and marketed through http://www.SkyMall.com, their vendor is Lizell, as the "Quickstand Plus" at a slightly higher price. With my two "cheap" cart towers I bought from Lowe's, and this much more pricey side table, I have plenty of surfaces (three) now to perform from for my younger aged kids programs (ages 3-10 is my particular target age). But this side table would work really well for mentalists, stage "card" workers, rope routines, or magicians that need a small, portable working surface to perform off of but don't need the extra storage space areas to lug around with them.

For complete information on the what I call the "World's Cheapest Magic Stand"- I paid $14.99 for it new on sale at Lowe's, go to the section of The Magic Café entitled "The Good, The Bad, and the Garbage." Then click on "Magical Accessories" subsection. Then click on "The World's Cheapest Magic Table" topic. Complete information there on this remarkable deal, how to view a picture of it, etc..

MagicBus,
I bought one of these after reading your post. After assembling it and making some modifications I went out and bought two more. I think they are great. I will be using one for my fun fair type walkaround gigs and the other for my school shows. The last will be a spare. Great tip...thanks! I am now looking for the "instand" that you mention above. The link does not seem to work for me. Thanks again, Wally

Thanks for the kind comments. I have three "carts" also (one for back up). I originally purchased two "insTands" (QuickStand Plus from http://www.SkyMall.com)some time ago, one I already broke. Be very careful to NOT overtighten the flat table top to the table base, it does "strip" out the connecting device as clearly warned about in the instructions (which I ignored like an idiot).

Just a follow up on the above post from some time ago, "Instands" now come in a variety of size tops, side trays, even wheels, go to http://www.instand.com Combine those with a "MagicBob" travel case from http://www.harnelcase.com you are all set. See MagicBob's terrific demonstration video on his regular use magic stand (magic table) which also doubles as his magic travel case at http://www.magicbob.org/RogerCase.wmv Unless you have large equipment to carry around, but still need something larger than a close up case, MagicBob's idea if terrific. MagicBob also uses this case/stand/table for all his performances including those recorded at http://www.ChristianMagician.org We should have some more programs posted to the site soon, our film editor's (Randy) computer crashed so he is in the process of getting it going again to make use of our most recent footage taken for the programs (made for cable access airing).
