I am interested in the flexible mirror illusion where you penetrate a mirror with a needle and bend it in half. I see them being sold for $46 (Funtyme) to $180 (mikame). I assume they all work the same way so my question is which one should I get? I mostly do kid shows so I don't need the top of the line but something solid and believable that won't embarrass me. In addition, I would like to do this with a puppet as I am a ventriloquist. The puppet can hold the bag, penetrate the mirror with the needle, etc. Any help as to which one I should get would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hmmm...not sure. Here is the link to the Funtyme effect. Maybe someone else has seen it.

I've got the Ickle Pickle model, and I would have to say stay away from that one for sure -it's rather cheaply made.
The Mikame version is simply exquisite ( though for that price, it better be! ) My opinion is to go for the best quality you can afford, because this is one effect that certainly benefits from having a high quality, heavy, "bulletproof" prop that seems as solid and real as can be. Your handling sells this effect, but having a nice mirror helps loads, too.

Have a look around second hand sections on magicians web-sites. Ours came from wwww.houseofmagicuk.com for £5 (less than $10). It then came back here in hand luggage.
I'm sure similar bargains can be obtained elsewhere. And looking is a big part of the fun.

Well, you get for you pay so in my case I go with the Mikame Version...The fact that you work for children does not want to say that you need the most cheap of the market, is props for performers of children magic who cost many more that a good set of cups and balls (Wolfs Magic) the secret is the QUALITY. If you have had in your hands something of Wolf Magic you know about that I speak. It is to say that obviously YOU KNOW that with Mikame don't have nothing to be worry about in a future ...only a thought.
Thanks, Hansel! P.S: I also have the model of Ickle Pickle... MIKAME ROCKS!

I recently saw a kid's magician peform this. His prop seemed like a cheap one, and the mirror was smudged, and appeared as if the mirror might be made out of metal instead of glass. For me, it detracted from the magic, but the kids absolutely love it. The magician had turned this into a good piece of "look don't see". The kids went wild. For the presentation, the quality of the prop didn't seem to matter for the intended audience.

John might have a valid point here, I don't often work with kids...

Don't sell the young kids short. Sometimes they see right through an effect before the adults do.

I have used this effect for years, going from a model I had from the Supreme Magic Company of England (quite a while back obviously!) to the Mikame. The Mikame is one to treasure, beautifully made and well disguised where it counts. But there are a couple of drawbacks: firstly, don't believe those early ads which said it could be examined - it definitely cant (looked at maybe, but not in their hands!) Secondly, the material used for the bag is not great quality, so holes from the needle start showing wear after a few uses. Finally be careful of using this with the cloth bag, its easy for that material to get pinched during the folding phase as it can cause the frame damage.
I used it for adults, and for this then the Mikame rocks. But IMO if you want it for kids shows, get a cheaper one to take the knocks and wear instead. |

You want the best quality because a cheap one will reveal the secret. I had one that used mylar to hide the joints. The one I have now is a think of beauty. You can't see the joints.
It pays to have the best equipment. |

I concur that the Incredible Flexible Mirror by Ickle Pickle is one of the worst props I've ever bought. I would love to see this effect performed, for I'm sure that in the right hands, it could be magical.

I fondly remember the first time I saw Doug Henning perform this on one of his TV specials in the 70's. I had to have it and eventually I purchased one and used it a lot in my shows.
May I suggest that you look into the modernized version of this that I saw recently? I don't recall exactly where I have seen it, but someone has updated this effect and replaced the mirror with an I-Pad. I thought that was pretty ingenious. Again, I don't remember where I saw it, but Google may yield a happy result.
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.
