Any interest in costuming tips for BIG guys? I see som many that look just awful, cause they don't know how to dress for their body type. Would anyone care? Would anyone listen?

As someone who seems to be getting ... ahem .... "bigger" over the years I would be interested in a book on that subject . (an e-book perhaps ?)

At 6'2" and 260 lbs, I'm VERY interested!
In fact, I came to this section to post a question about this very thing and came across your post. I recently got a great jacket on Ebay that suits my style for a great price. Problem is it's a bit too big. It's a 52L and I should actually be in about a 49L. I bought it knowing it was too big because for the price I figured I could afford to have it tailored and will be going somewhere to have that done. The question is, when having it taken in, do I have it taken in all the way to an exact fit or do I need to leave a little room under for body loading. I want the jacket to look right on me when there are no loads, but don't want to look lumpy with them either. At this point, I have no specific loads in mind, but am trying to get this right so as not to ruin a great jacket.

Short and Rotund = Big?
If so -- I fit. (Think "Stubby Kaye" from olden days of theater/film)

Always glad to see other bigger guys on stage.
Where I am, seems like 95% of guys who perform in any capacity are all a 28 inch waist and under 5'2". I stick out like a big sore thumb! When it comes to costumes, for any reason, it definitely seems like the lil' fellers get the good stuff. Heck, even in high school, for South Pacific. They measured us and still my white uniform didn't fit. If I put my arms down, or breathed, it woulda' ripped. So they got this hideously over sized uniform made from t-shirt material. It was incredibly embarrassing to wear. Every time we got close to the end of the show I'd get so grumpy. The fabric OBVIOUSLY was no good for it, but the fact that no one cared it was a tent kinda hurt my feelings. Like I should be happy they found an novelty sized costume for me. I'm big and tall. Very challenging to find clothing. Most stores seem to believe you can be one, and not the other. They believe you can't be both at the same time. I do most of my shopping at a big and tall store.
I have heard that it's a good idea to wear some sort of coat / jacket, if you are a big guy, buttoned if possible. Rather than just a shirt, or shirt and vest. The basic shirt look draws attention to your belly. - Donald

Donald you seem to understand my dilema quite well
Earlier this year while shopping at a trendy higer end retailer, you should have ssen the look of disgust and snotty response I got when I had the nerve to ask a clerk if they had this certain pair of jeans that was a 36X30 in a 40X32. Apparnatly people with a waist larger than 36 don't want to look stylish since that was the largest pant size they carried.

As it turns out, I'm not fat, I'm just short for my weight (by about 3 feet).

The diameter of my neck makes it hard to get shirts that fit well in the body but are always too tight in the neck. I have a neck like a pro football player. I guess all that power lifting, weight training and training the muscles in my neck for karate and kick boxing has it's price.

Hey BDC... what sources can you give us bigger guys for costuming and attire needs?
Any other sage advice for those of us deemed portly?

I haven't done any formal shows in several years, but in my personal wardrobe, I tend to find the best fit (I'm quite large) in my price range by using an overseas tailoring operation.
There are quite a few made-to-measure companies that either allow you to submit your own measurements online or visit with a "traveling tailor" who takes your measurements and helps you select cloth. In a matter of several weeks, you can have reasonably well fitting clothing for a price that ranges from average off-the-rack to high-end retail. The fit is (assuming measurements are correct) much better than an unaltered stock piece, though it won't compare with true custom or "bespoke" clothing, as one would find at a custom tailor such as housed on Savile Row. For me, I'm able to get shirts from $50 (all cotton french cuff made to my measurements) and pants from $65. The fit is the best I own, but it took a few "trial" pieces (cheap shirts and pants) to dial in the measurements. I'm hoping to have a couple of suits and a dozen more shirts made up now that I plan to get back into performing semi-professionally. Most tailors can even add special features, such as additional pockets, extra "room" for body loads, or possibly even a topit, though you'd probably have to give fairly explicit instructions to get it right. As I said, there are a multitude of these companies out there, some very very good, and others not so much. My chosen tailor is on the low end of the price range, and is acceptable in terms of quality and fit. A google search should turn up quite a few options. |
