Hi Guys,
I'm planning to buy all of Andrew Mayne's illusion books, as I have to present a grand illusion show next December with a low budget. But, to your mind, which one should I buy first? Thanks. Franfran La Malice

All of his books are mainly ideas for illusions without construction details. You may find more usable ideas in the Osborne series, especially if you are new to the construction of illusions. Woodbury's first tape is also useful for details of base and stair building. I own Solo-x, but have not purchased his newest book. Good luck.

Andrew has great ideas and very cool books I am sure you will find many effects to use.
Well, I can personally recommend them all. I have purchased all of his Illusion books and love the ideas in them. They are great. As far as what would be best for low budget and an alternate to the MANY black art effects in most low budget illusion books, I suggest Andrew's book Illusion F/X. It requires minimal construction but with optimum impact. Here is a list of the effects: Head Trip 2-Dimensional Sawing The Infinity Cabinet Stripper Ultimate Escape Balloon Box Zig Zag X 2 Instant Sub Trunk Asrah Basket Circle 2 Aerodynamic |

I only have his book Touching Sky which has 6 different levitations. If you are doing a stage show there is one where you sit Indian style on a stool then levitate a foot or so. I haven't tried it but it seems cool and doesn't take too much construction.
The best levitation in the book is Broomflight where you straddle a broom that has a towel draped over it and then both your feet come up and tuck behind as you appear to float. It's possible that some would be able to figure it out but it looks so neat and funny that they will still like it. Can be done with any broom and towel. Mark

Gracy HM,
Can you elaborate on Andrew's ILLUSION F/X book? What is "Instant Sub Trunk?" Jack |

Yup, Please elaborate more on A.Mayne's Illusion F/X book as I am interested in this book.
Possibly write some short write up of each illusion in the books or the few good ones will also do... Thanks Symmatrix

I will elaborate very soon but I can't remember off the top of my head. Right now I am busy and can't get my book (not in the right place for it) but I will follow up my descriptions of each illusion. Symmantrix you said "tell of the good ones"? They are all great; you'll love it.
Take care, Kyle |

If that's it... it's great, since all are great illusions. Hope to hear the fantastic review of yours, Gracy.
Man, just can't wait for the review. Symmatrix

Just received his latest offering, Illusion Book. In my opinion it is his best so far, 100 illusions, as usual some are mindblowing, some are unbeleivable and some are down right crazy. But all are usable in different settings and are only limited by your mind. Buy them all, but if you can only get one, get this first. A+++++

fxmagik:
Are you referring to A. Mayne's "Illusion" book or his "Illusion F/X" book? Thanks. Symmatrix

Okay guys here it is
For starts when I got it I really wasn't sure what I would get and when I opened the package and finished reading this book I was surprised, pleasantly! So enough general thoughts here are small descriptions and my thoughts. Head Trip - The magican unveils a large banner opens it wide and obscures his body from view. Painted on the front of the is a stylized silhouette of his body. The magican pokes his head out of a slit in the banner. After looking side to side, his/her head plummets to the floor then shoots back up to its normal position; he/she drops the banner and moves forward. My thoughts? It is a cool effect! Fast but has a punch. This is really a fun effect and looks great. Ok, sorry, I am leaving sort of have to. I will post the rest tomorrow sorry for the wait. |

It only gets better.
Next up we have 2-D sawing, it is a very cool effect. The magician walks out on stage holding two panels. He sets them on the ground in front of himself and begins to unfold them. The first panel has an outline of someone's body drawn on it and a hole where the head would go. He sets it aside and then unfolds the second panel. The second panel has the outline of the bottom half of a person's body and a cut out at the very bottom where the feet come out of. He sets the bottom panel in place in front of his legs (feet are seen) and lifts the other panel in front of his upper half of his body with his head poking out the front. His/her assistant walks onstage holding a large knife. She/he then sticks the knife between the two panels and drags it across cuting the magician in two. She then takes the top panel off onto the floor next to the other to show the magician has been severed in two. Next she slides it back and places it back in place where upon the magician folds up the panels and takes a bow. My thoughts— a very visual neat looking illusion. I feel it is a nice alternative to the standerd sawing and also has a feeling as if it is zig-zag like also. Since they are panels it REALLY packs flat which is the BIG bonus. If I needed to do a show I would opt for this over sawing and similar effects for the fact that is impressive, visual magic that you can fit in the trunk of your car and still have nearly all the room of the trunk you did. Constuction is minimal also which is why I like it. Ok next in the book is "The Infinity Cabinet", a classic of magic. If you don't have it, buy this book and build it! I promise this kills as an opener. Imagine music starts, an empty box is on stage. An assistant walks on stage and opens the front of the box holding a light. She shines it inside to show it is empty. Next an assistant pulls the front of the box (a rolling shade) down. Suddenly in a flash of flame and smoke all of the walls of the box roll up and there stands the magician. (This is a description as to how it can appear onstage.) It is my coise on it's presentation but of course it can be done differently. My thoughts- As I said I it! I love appearances and vanishes and this is so cool. It can really start a show with a bang (flash pot included or not ). It is really a cool thing. Construction is not bad either, the book tells you everything you will need to know for materials and has diagrams as to how it needs to be put together. I can not recommend this effect enough! The next effect is called Stripper. The magician is strapped into a straight jacket. Music begins and the magician begins to try to escape. He then walks behind a screen and throws the jacket over the top edge . The screen is moved center stage. Articles of the magician's clothes are then one by one thrown over the top of the screen in sync with the music. His/Her tie, shirt, pants and finally an outrageous pair of boxer shorts and placed on the top edge of the screen. The screen is then turned around to reveal the magician's assistant. Suddenly the magician appears in the audience. My thoughts— wonderful sums it up but I will elaborate. It is a perfect blend of escape, comedy, and magic and of course a little ummff! at the end to give it MAXIMUM impact. The audience is already clapping for the escape and then to take it to a level like this is beyond genius. I love it! The pros of this are once again it packs completely flat but if you don't have a straight jacket another restraint can replace it without loss of any of the impact if done right. Construction is easy and you will have an effect that will blow them away. Those are the descriptions and my thoughts for now. Tommorrow— The Ultimate Escape, Balloon Box, and Zig Zag X 2. Take care, Kyle |

Has anyone seen Andrew perform these tricks? I have to say I have never seen him at any magic convention and have not read about him in the trades. Does he perform, and if so where? I would really like to go see him. Is he in Vegas? If he has performed these effects I wonder why he doesn't include actual photos and real building plans with dimensions etc.??
Does anyone have any info?? |

Kyle,
Thanks for the time to give us a review. I really look forward to your review of the rest. About the Infinity Chamber, are the walls of that box all paper? Is the box on a platform that can be spun around? Lastly, is the box tipped over to show it is empty? Thanks. JIm
