Anyone here perform the Spidora effect at Halloween ? I would love to hear from someone who has used the prop and how they felt about the reaction it generates...

I don't know if my buddy Jimmy Dixon ever visits (or is even a member of) the Café, but you can probably google him and send him an email. He has a Spidora that he sets up at a fair in Memphis. While not truly an effect to be PERFORMED, it is a great display for haunted houses.

Still not sure why this question was posed in the "Little Darling" forum, however!

Keep reading, and you will undertand why I posted this here.
The effect I am talking about is not the carnival attaction with the head of a girl and the body of a spider. What I am refering to is a magic effect that is being manufactured by Joe Fairchild called SPIDORA THE CARD SPIDER. AS described on Joe's website : A card is selected, and then the spider reveals the card in her web as she spins around on it. I have seen the ads. Joe makes one that is big , for illusion shows, and one that is table top size, for parlor size shows. What I am trying to find out is if anyone has purchased this , used it, and how it played.

I really like Spidora It's a neat effect. However, I don't have one and probably won't get one - they seem to have a lot of mechanical "issues"

AH...that makes more sense! I've never seen one from Fairchild, only the Owen Card Spider. If it's a similar method, it's probably good. I've heard good things about Fairchild products. Especially the Dirt Eradicator.

Steve Taylor performed this on one of his DVDs.
I think it was a bonus DVD that was released only to select people a few years ago, when you subscribed to his Kidshow Kaleidoscope CDs back then. The DVD was of his "Buggy About Books" show, copyright 2002. I'm pretty sure the DVD is not on his website. At one time Dazzling Magic used to sell this prop, however, I don't see it on their website any more. - Donald

Hi Mark:
I've never seen Fairchild's Spidora, but the other items of his that I've seen are high quality, so I'm sure it's the the same with his Card Spider. Honestly, I've never seen anyone do it in performance, but David Ginn has a routine for it in his Magic and Monsters book; I liked his routine and have wanted to it for years. I did see a dealer demo it once - it really looks magical - just like the spider is weaving a card on the web. Ron |

I have seen the effect. It is Very Cool to watch. I love the premise of the spider "spinning" the card. It looks great. Very Memorable. And if doing it for kids, there's no reason not to use Alphabet or Animal Cards. I see used ones for sale every now and then, but if (and when) I buy one it will be from Fairchilds for sure.

Great effect not only for children but for parents, teachers, librarians, etc. It makes an impact and plays big. Depending on the quality, I have had two, they can be "difficult" at times. The first one I owned I had purchased as a "used" item on Ebay. I think it might have been homemade because it always got stuck or in the process of spinning the "gimmick" would break and nothing would happen. There was a way for me to still do the reveal at the end but it wasn't as nice of an effect. The one I currently own I bought from Dazzling Magic and it works great. I used mine in my "Catch the Reading Bug" Summer Reading Show a few years ago.

Here's a link to the Fairchild Magic version, that several people on this thread referred to:

Mark/Donald, I believe you'll find a performance of it on Kidabra's Halloween Magic DVD. Duane Laflin performing perhaps. Can't recall at the moment.
Owens sells one as well. http://owenmagic.com/Card/Spider_Web/spider_web.html My guess is it probably costs an arm and eight legs!! John |
