Is the bad economy affecting with your illusions shows, or is it just me?

Its just you, Mike.

Hahaha! Just kidding. I think it's affecting all of us. I have had some major events canceled due to budget cuts, and layoffs and living in the banking Capitol of the United States, the mergers are killing it here. Even had some companies try to cut back of fees because of budget cuts. Its everyone, but stick in there, because when we pop back out of this economic crunch, people are going to want to celebrate and the funds will be there again.

Hope all is well, man!

Illusion shows here in Texas have picked up ever since oil went above $100 a barrel...of course, the market was down for several years before that happened.

Not as much as gas prices -- going on the road with large stuff doubled in gas price several years ago -- then, recently doubled again. I was lucky to get sick and only have those bills to manage -- and have been selling my books and illusions as I cannot travel.

Here's the thing -- marketing a standard show in the standard way got harder -- but those who change the marketing and increase the sales ability of their show though rational means may have to work harder -- but will maintain (maybe not increase) income by hard work on the marketing as well as a pro show.

Local magi who cut prices just to get bookings will spoil the market in these times -- but "twas ever the case."

Ya just gotta become something they (the paying audience or sponsor) cannot live without!

Or as the (very old) radio show used to say "tain't easy McGee."

My goal is to move to Chicago because they are having less finance problems than Detroit.

I have been a marketing madman and found out a few hrs ago I have a meeting with the CEO of a group of restaurants here Thurs morning but not getting my hopes up. Well maybe just a little because he is taking time out of a busy schedule Im sure (I think he is with a law firm also). I promoted shows and not strolling mind you.

I am grateful no matter what because it shows my marketing is on the right track.

What bothers me most is this "financial crisis" is worldwide.

I use to get calls for kids parties (which I do not do) but they have stopped. Oil trading at 90 a barrel.

One of my good friends in magic told me not long ago ..

"If they're telling you that they're working more than ever .. they're lying more than ever."

He speaks the truth ...

I was a little relieved to see your post Dynamike. I was wondering the same thing. Is it me or is it the economy? It may still be me , but at least I now have another choice!

I think bad economy had always been good for entertainment, especially for magic. People need to dream and get up from their TV for affordable shows. Go on the road with with your van, your partner and your kids. Keep tickets price low, live your dream on the road. Go where nobody goes. Stay mysterious, people like it, people want to believe in the feeling of magic. Don't try to make it funny all the time. Have fun doing it and never take yourself seriously, only your magic should.

Break you illusions in panels, if takes less space in a truck. Make it green!

Is not just in the USA, also in Italy there is a HUGE problem.
Every time they book a show with the big illusion, after that they know the price they start to think about..!
Anyway, for a illusion show there are a lot of expenses
( Truck,dancers,assistant,etc...)and this the people don't understand!
This way a lot of magician ( like me ) we star to work on cruise ship!!
