In your opinion, what is the easiest false shuffle that is fairly deceptive?

John Cornelius, The Oh Calcutta Shuffle. Totally in the hands false Hindu shuffle, easy to do. Has an aspect of it that looks more deceptive than a real Hindu shuffle.

I think there is a difference when thinking of 'easy', between easy (quick) to learn and easy to do consistently without losing track of any cards while talking or being stressed.
There are as you know a zillion threads on which false shuffle is the best, depending on the circumstances. Since you are not a newcomer here, I suspect that maybe you are asking this because you want to recommend an easy usable shuffle to a beginner? What is the intended use? How about the Optical False Shuffle, (aka The Rezvani Shuffle)? That is easy to do and easy to learn. So is the false Greek Shuffle, which looks very unpretentious and sloppy. Speaking of that, the Charlier aka Hay Mow Shuffle is another even easier shuffle which looks quite deceptive and uncomplicated. All of these are non-riffle shuffles that equal one cut of the deck.

Im trying to help a friends son, and he is coming along well. A good false shuffle would be great for an effect he wants to learn, and I wanted to point him in a direction where he can find some info that would be within his abilities.
Thanks for the help! |

I would also go for the 'Haymow' false shuffle (Charlier shuffle). There is also another false shuffle of note from Professor Charlier called the 'Charlier undercut overhand shuffle' but this false shuffle does take some practice to do smoothly.Best to stick with Haymow. I use the Haymow all the time with a cyclical stack. The trick with the Haymow is to make it look as messy and chaotic as possible

Bob King's false shuffle in the Annotated Erdnase by Darwin Ortiz is a great false shuffle that isn't hard to master.

Do you have any other requirement besides easy and deceptive? For instance, do you usually work seated, or do you need something for walkaround? Also, do you want to downplay your skill, or come across as polished?

Dan Garrett's false shuffle from several of his lecture notes is one of the best shuffles I've used. I think it's called the overhanded/underhanded shuffle. It's based off of principles from a shuffle in the Royal Road.

Here's another vote for the Haymow or Charlier. And, Andy Moss is right... make it look very sloppy and it fools most everybody.

Joshua Jay one is easy as well. Also Eugene Burger and Patrick page have very good and very easy overhand shuffles that are totally false. They are more about additude than sleight of hand.

You can learn how to do the 'Haymow' from Richard Osterlind's booklet on his 'Breakthrough Card System, 20th Anniversary Edition' under the effect 'card calling'.
I think the shuffle is also explained in 'The Royal Road to Card Magic' by Hugard and Braue. It will probably be cited under it's more formal name 'Charlier false shuffle' rather than Haymow. Dennis Loomis also offers instruction and guidance on his own interesting handling of the Haymow. Here is the link to his website. http://www.loomismagic.com/memdeck06.php Hope this helps. Andy. |

I would add a few more to the list:
Simon Aronson's Pull Through Shuffle is very easy and very deceptive. Harry Lorayne's Riffle Diffle and Super Riffle Diffle The Artanis Shuffle as written up by Frank Garcia References upon request. Best, Vlad |

Simon Aronosn's Pull Through Shuffle can be found in his book Simply Simon. It's an excellent shuffle that I use quite a bit.
