I popped a Morgan dollar in my pocket this morning, just to palm here and there, for practise.
It's gone! I have actually, truly, vanished a coin! Even though it was not worth more than 12 bucks or so, I'm bummed. Funny how you get attached to individual coins. Sure, I can easily replace it. But I'd love to know what happened to it. I hope it's in good hands. Krintz |

How many people would pay $12 for a dollar, then tell people that they lost the dollar but only paid $12 for it?
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Great comment Josh!
I use the small deep coin pocket of my jeans to carry my two coins. A lot of people who wear that sort of garment (I don't know if you do) actually forget that the coin pocket is there. But it is more or less impossible to lose a coin from there. If you wear the type of trousers with pockets that end diagonally (like in a suit), I would try to back step where I had been sitting in deep sofas and car seats that day. Perhaps it can be recovered. Well, it wouldn't be a perfect vanish then so maybe that is a bad idea. Hopefully it will be find by someone who decides to take up magic because of it. I find money everywhere, perhaps I have a gloomy outlook on life and look down too much. Always leads to a quick stressed process of decision making; is it worth enough to pick up without being stared at like a bum? If so, will they see from a distance that it is indeed a bigger coin/bill? Does picking it up actually make me a bum? If I step over it, will I appear arrogant or decadent? Is someone who knows me around? Is the potential owner around? If so should I palm it and deny everything or give it back? Etc.

I found one of my very old Morgans (I used to use very worn, almost slick, Morgans....Now I use 1921's) in an old recliner I was getting rid of.
Get used to losing coins! Try not to lose gaffs! Buy pants with deep pockets that are free hanging (not the ones that are attached top to bottom to the pants leg)! If you are wearing pants that don't have the right pockets.....DON'T SIT DOWN!

I carry my coins in a small leather coin purse... it's less likely the purse will accidently slip out of your pocket when sitting.

I was at the Castle with Vinny The Godfather and Kirk G last year.... I lost a Cop/Sil coin somewhere there. I purposely dropped the matching Walker and Penny. Just in case a magician finds it... he would have a matching set to go with it. That lessened the heavy feeling.

That's a great story Ran my man and I would expect something like that from you...Good stuff from a great guy.
I've lost a coin or two in my day but funny one of my extreme practice methods years back was to practice coin rolling as I walked through the streets of NYC, especially over the grates above the subways. You drop it, you lose it! It was a great test for me, not to drop the coin into the dark abyss below. As you get better and better your confidence overcomes the possibility of losing a coin. Happily Ive never lost one that way but have lost several right in my house that I've never happened upon again. Another story has me practicing some sleights while on an escalator and accidentally dropping a coin into the pocketbook on the shoulder of a woman in front of me... I thought about how to retrieve it and then how stupid it would sound in NYC to say, "Miss, excuse me I dropped some money into your purse, can I have it back?..." Couldn't think of any magic strong enough to work in this case, so I lost that one for sure. Again Rannie, great story my friend. -Mb

You think that's bad I have lost at least 3 one hundred dollar bills since I was 16. I am 39 now. It's a bad feeling when you reach in your pocket for the $100 dollar bill to do the swith. You are looking the rest of the night on the floor as you are doing magic for the other tables.

OMG I freakin hate when this happens to me! I bought a Barber half dollar a few months ago and in the car on the way home I was practicing the coin roll and fell into a hole in the car where the clutch is and I cant get it now. I'm so glad I never lost my walking liberty. I'm not sure if this helps but try using a metal detector.

One morning, years ago, I went out to the driveway to get in my car for work. Lying on the driveway by my car door was my folded up $100 bill for my bill switch. Pretty lucky.
Another time I was playing poker in Las Vegas, and lost ( I'm sure from my pocket ) the 20 centavos and brass coin from my CSB. Thankfully I didn't lose the gaff. The 20 centavos was easy to replace, but the brass coin (unusual variety) was going to be impossible. Months later, David Neighbors (who knew of my dilemma) was in a shop in New York, and spotted a brass coin that matched mine. He bought it and I bought it from him when he got back to Colorado. This all happened 28 years ago, and I still use that CSB set.

Wes my man, you're clearly not from NYC... All of what you described above would probably get you maced on these streets, not to mention a good swift kick in the n*ts...
Oh and hey Sammy, I didn't lose anything in Colorado but actually found a nice coin shop in Durango and was able to buy a great set of soft Barber halves. Beautiful state, Colorado.

Barbers are the nicest feeling coins I have ever felt. But I agree with Marion here, ANYTHING can make you loose a coin. Someone brushing past you, kicked in the n*ts, putting on a seatbelt, pulling something else from your pocket etc. don't feel bad, Its happened to us all.

I remember about 17 years ago I bought a Coke from a machine using a Johnson's Scotch & Soda gimmick, that was the most expensive Coke I've ever had. It took a while to get over that one...

Losing gaff coins is why I quit purchasing gimmicks in quarter denominations.
Halves are less likely to be spent. I still occasionally really vanish one though... -A |
