Hi everybody,
While watching several of David Copperfield TV specials I recognized that on some of them he must have presented other effects which are not shown in the TV special. Why did he used those edits ? Did the order of the effects in the show was changed for the TV special ? Did he show other effects that we never saw on TV ? Exemple : The Magic of David Coppefield XI - The Explosif Encounter The TV special shows David saying thank you to the audience, but has said this already before the commercial cut. Why ? I hope that you understand what I mean... Oliver. |

I noticed that too. I wrote it off as the television network/producers trying to give the "live" feel. It's almost like the show was still going while we were in commercial. I'm sure that there were effects presented in the live show that we did not see on television.
If memory serves..and I might be wrong here.. David Copperfield live was a 2hr(ish) show...the tv specials were only an hour long. They've probably got enough footage from those specials to put off 2 or 3 more specials of effects that we've never seen him do on TV...wow..that would be cool to have him back on TV AGAIN.. Show DB and CA how its done.. sigh..that's a pipe dream (not that I have anything against those two.. but Copperfield is the master imho) |

If it worked the same way the Tornado of Fire special worked, he shot several hours of the show, including re-takes, and they chose the best ones.

I seem to recall a lawsuit by some audience members when he taped for CBS in Florida. I think the story was that they felt "used" because getting it perfect for television proved to be a major inconvenience. Does anyone remember this and know the outcome?

Even though there was a lot of "down time" as they reset and reshot illusions, etc., everyone knew what they were getting into coming in. Best I can remember, the taping was free...

I'm referring to the special that was taped at the Broward Center in 1992.

David Copperfield let the ******* Magician expose his best effects one after one. It ruined all of his work, and nothing is done, even by Copperfield himself.
So I will not speak anymore about the TV special from Copperfield...waste of time. David: move your ***, and keep the dream and your secrets safe. Pleassssse |

There is nothing that can be done to the MM or any other exposers except in certain specific instances that don't apply in this case.
As a result, DC would be wasting his time trying to do anything about it, and likely has already had his legal team inform him of that fact. Copperfield puts on one helluva live show. It was some of the best 2 hours I've ever spent in a theatre.

Good example would be the mismade Lady he featured on the Lear Jet vanish tv special. Amazing! Magnificently designed by the late Gary Oullete (forgive misspelling) and built by master John Gaughan. Unfortunately not very feasable to execute on an ordinary stage...

You are correct Chris,
I remember the Linking Finger Rings being on one of his earlier specials. I'd have to look through my videos to find the one it was on. I believe it was pre-Alcatraz... Test Conditions and Thirteen were on the International Version of Tornado of Fire Special. Unfortunately, I'm sure David's special was allotted a certain amount of air time and they had to edit down the footage for that time-slot. In regards to the original posting, if you read the Genii Magazine featuring the article about Copperfield's show, you will learn a lot about what went into the filming of the special and how many takes they went through. It was equally as interesting to read about Thirteen and set up procedures for the show! -Bryan |

Thanks for your reply guys.
Two important things to know : 1) Sometimes David Copperfield and his crew change the name of an illusion. So it seems to be a different one, but it's the same. (i.e. : Cocoon vs Passion Prison) 2) For those who are looking for a list of the TV specials and the tricks presented on TV have a look at http://www.themagicofdc.com. Oliver. |

David has never performed the linking finger rings on any of his American tv specials. The routine was in his live show for a very short period of time about a decade ago..
It's all in the reflexes.

I would love to read that Genii article, is it available online anywhere? I am guessing probably not? Rich |

He would tape effects from all the different shows and then select the best ones from each of them. You can see this if you watch the Niagra Falls Special. He was wearing one outfit, then right before the next illusion started he was wearing one color of shirt and then the next illusion he went to he was wearing a different colored shirt. |

I was at the 'secret warehouse' once and saw all of the tapes that he and his crew have accumulated over the years...Thousands and thousands of tapes.
They have all the tv specials and they also film every live show. All these tapes are stored on giant racks and listed by date. Just to give you an example of how many tapes they have, lets say he does 500 shows a year. He has tapes going back about 25 years. That's 12500 tapes! Then their are tapes from different camera angles or multiple cameras. Tapes of various news pieces and tv shows he has been on. That adds up to...well, a lot of tapes. And not every tape is small like a MiniDV or VHS tape. The tapes from the earlier years are in these blue boxes the size of an extra large pizza! |
