I'm sure, like myself, many of you have bits in your show that grew out of nothing. An ad-lib you kept in or something a child said one day. It's funny how the oddest things can turn into a good bit of business in your show. I thought I'd share my most recent and hopefully a few of you can do likewise.
In my silk routine I used to use blue, red and green silks and the volunteer picks a colour to vanish. I couldn't find my blue silk one day so grabbed a light blue one from me hanky box. I didn't notice at the time but it was also slightly greenish possibly on the blue side of turquoise. Anyhow, when I picked it up in the show it sparked quite a debate among the children to whether it was blue or green. I started referring to it as "the handkerchief of debatable colour" and it got a laugh. I now use it every time and have added more jokes about it's colour. "Is it blue? is it green? nobody knows.." "Somebody last week said it was teal! I was so impressed" What little things have happened in your show that have evolved into a set bit? George |

About a dozen years ago my top hat accidentally fell off my head to the floor, and the kids started laughing. "I'm on to something!" I realized, and since then, whenever I do a show for young children, I always have my hat fall off my head when I bow after each trick.

A while ago I pulled out the wrong bag of balloons when offering to make a child an animal. Instead of the regular selection I found I was holding the qualatex 'Character' assortment. I proceeded to offer the child a balloon - 'Which would you like? - I've got all the colours: Brown, Black, Dark brown, Flesh, see-through, grey. oh yes, cos them's the popular ones with the kids - ooh mister, mister - have you got grey? Do you have puce??'
It got such a laugh that I've kept that bag in my box and pull it out every time now, before switching it for a regular bag of assorted colours.

I was once doing this large festival show and when asked what a magicians favorite animal was a girl had her hand up and was smiling ear to ear. In confidence and a loud voice she proudly announced.. Kangaroo! The audience lost it and I pretty much had to refrain myself as tears rolled down my cheeks. So I now use it as part of the pater in my shows for that routine.

I will never use it, but I will also never forget the time I was out smarted by a 5 year old girl. I told her to "look at the card, and put it face down on my brief case" she said OK if you insist, so she put the card behind her back, and her face down on my brief case. With the card behind her back she was also flashing it to me. My mouth dropped open, I was speechless, and all the kids had a good laugh at the look on my face. Sometimes I think that little girl was really 40 years old.

Hehehe al that is classic for sure. I once had a person when asked to sign the card signed the back of the card while showing me the face of it the entire time. The audience lost it and this person did not get it until 45 seconds later as to what she did. It was so funny that I used it as a running gag and have developed a line in my routine now that uses that premise.

Todsky and Ross, ever tried combining the old jumping off head and hat chasing gags into that.
Ad-libs are funny. I often find you come up with lines out of the blue on-stage that you wouldn't have thought of sitting at home with a pen and paper. Most routines seem to double in length within the first year of performing and I've usually no idea where half the stuff has come from. I added a line to my puppet routine about a month ago that got a laugh first time I did it (probably because I'd just thought it up and was genuinely amused myself therefore so were the audience) anyhow I kept on using it and hardly got a response. I was just about to scrap it but used it again and the Dad started laughing so much he had to leave the room so as not to disturb the show! George |
