I've uploaded a video
http://seesmic.com/video/AgfJ5Np8mS Basically my fan is looking like crap, and I'm always left over with a bulk of cards that weren't fanned correctly. Is it a pressure issue, thumb positioning?? Thanks! |

The deck you are holding on your left hand can be tilted to the left until it touches the crotch of your thumb. This makes the fan more circular looking. And when you fan the cards with your right hand, apply pressure on the face of the cards and not the sides. Re-position your thumb and bring it on the left face side of the cards and then apply slight pressure on the cards as you fan (the way you are doing). As the thumb releases pressure as the cards are fanned you will not end up with a stack at the end.
Hope this help. |

Yes, make sure to start deep in the crotch of your left thumb, that should add another 45-50 degrees of fan.

Here's an updated video try #2:
http://seesmic.com/video/w2lqGhNGRC Where do you guys have your thumbs normally? More to the corner or center? I'm gonna keep practicing this until it feels right, I'm still missing something but feel like I'm close at least. Anyone else have problems fanning with big hands? |

Usually people do the fan with the left hand...when I start in magic I try the fan and don't get it, well I try with my right and its almost perfect...so I do with my right hand...when I try with my left looks like yours...so make a try I don't know any rule says that the fan has to be with the left hand...
Thanks, Hansel!

Denver, you are getting it. But the left side of the cards (before you start the fanning) are not tilted towards and touching the crotch of your left thumb. This position makes the fan bigger and when the fan is bigger more cards will be released when you start the fanning. What you are doing is like a half fan and not a circular fan.
My hands are big too and I have no problems. |

When I was learning thumb fans (I actually use my index finger, but that's another story), I found that there are a number of parameters that have big influence, such as:
* Staring with the deck deep in the thumb crotch of the hand holding the deck (angular size of the fan) * The amount of pressure you apply with the fanning thumb (spreading force, controls evenness of card separation) * The amount of pressure you apply on the thumb and finger holding the deck (spreading resistance, controls that you get all the cards in the fan not just the middle stock) * The position of the thumb and finger that is holding the deck (radial extension of the fan) * The position of the fanning thumb on the deck (ease of fanning, polishing the move) * The condition of the deck (newer is better, old cards usually require a pressure fan) This is the order in which they improved my fans, YMMV. Denver, maybe you could try it a bit slower on the video.

Denver, you are still holding the deck incorrectly when starting. Tuck that deck so deep into the crotch of your thumb and first finger that your finger tips aren't even touching the back of the deck. They will be to the right of the deck (from your view point) at the start. Hope this helps!

Yes, the deck is quite a distance from the thumb crotch and the fan is still not circular in shape.
