Hi Guys,
I have just returned from a trade show in Cannes. It is for the TV industry and they were selling the MM show on a trade stand and I spoke with someone who new a lot about the show. He thought I was working for the BBC and was happy to share info. It seems that the show has been re commissioned due to the success of the original series being repeated on the MyNetworkTV station. He boasted to me that the show has saved the network and as a result they ordered another thirteen shows and a project that was dead was suddenly revitalised. The guy I spoke to was from a company called ‘Alfred Haber’ and it was him that told me that although they have numerous magicians working behind the camera, the MM is only a Dancer to ensure a theatrical performance. I also asked him how they were able to reveal the secrets and he explained that anyone can buy illusions if you know where to look. He said that they have bought illusions from some very well known magicians but they were never sold with any sort of contract that limits the use or exposure! From the publicity I saw it looks like 26 more shows are due and I think this is once again going to be a sad time for the industry. I never told the guy I was a magician and he was very happy to answer these questions and send me away with a flyer advertising the show. On the front of the flyer is the MM performing impaled which has always been a favourite illusion of mine when performed by DC or JP. These are sad times for the illusionist and the art of magic. It was formed mainly from affiliates of the failed UPN network and WB Network that were left out of the UPN/WB merger into The CW Network. Quote:

I bet the station you are referring to is carrying programming from another affiliate in prime time and carrying the MyNetworkTV programming off prime time. Sort of like how WB affiliates would carry UPN programming off prime time. (http://www.mynetworktv.com/schedule.php) MyNetworkTV's only claim to fame so far is that they now have WWE Smackdown... From what I understand the WWE has been very disappointed in the ratings so far. If the wrestling fans can't find it I am sure we have nothing to fear from Magic's Greatest Secrets. I doubt anyone is watching this crap, at any rate.

Bill, a wealth of information there. Thanks. MynetworkTV is on channel 9 here in NJ which is an old station. Used to be WOR. You are correct that the programming guide says the show is at 9, however, that station also broadcasts football and if the time is the same, the MM gets bumped. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

A couple of days later, NO ONE will remember the reveals. Just not a big deal for the industry.
Remember the MM can reveal the sub trunk but there is no way anyone would link that lame performance to the performance of the Pendragons. NO ONE will remember how HE did it. Imagine the MILLIONS of Svengali Decks that have been demoed to the public (and sold) over the years...no body remembers that method 5 minutes later. The scum bag image will remain amongst magicians (and rightly so) but it's really not a deterent to the industry and WILL get some interested in joing the art. Put SUB TRUNK in google. It's everywhere. The Pendraons still knock 'em dead. The MM is laughable.

Doug I agree. It hurts for a while but in the long run no blood - no foul.

And incidentally you say it's nice for him to get work as if he's been out of work for a while ... over the last few years he's been in CSI, Day Break, Cold Case, more recently The X-Files 2, he's got a recurring role on Stargate Atlantis, and he does a lot of voice work in animation. Just appearing at all the various sci-fi and animation conventions around the world would probably bring him 100k a year ... |

I recall ANOTHER masked magician on television a few years ago. He wore a different style mask than Valentino's. I vaguely remember the mask was light in color and revealed his mouth. He demonstrated a trick where he changed the time on a spectator's watch. The explaination involved a tiny collar that slipped onto the winder of the watch, connected to a length of spring in a cable that ran up his sleeve and was connected to a rotating motor contained in a box in his pocket. This seemed like a bogus explaination to me, which is why I still remember it. However, it seems that he did actual exposures of other effects.
Does this ring a bell for anybody else? Could he be the new masked 'magician'. |

There is no "new" masked magician. This is the old masked magician, Valentino. He's just fatter than he used to be.

I think lay people see these Mask Magician antics in exactly the same light as they do "behind the scenes" documentaries of popular films...harmless and forgettable. They still WANT to suspend belief...and they will by going to back to the theater.

Putting aside the exposure, the narrator's asides and innuendo about the magician and his lovely assistants throughout is the worst -- seems geared to adolescent boys. Even my 16 year old was shaking his head.

Yeah, I don't know what everyone is worried about. I watched that last part, with the fan, and it's an absolute farce. The commentary is awful. Again, I don't know how a non-magician could even sit through that crap. Or why any magician would want to. It's a horrible TV show.

The cut and restored rope trick was about as interesting as watching hair grow.
Clumsy and very basic. No skill, no fancy sleights. What did annoy me was the showing of the TT with the floating can. I mean he could have done it with a hole in the can, for #$%# sake. |

Haha I agree Tom! Peeved me as well...
The commentary is absolutley appalling. Made for a good laugh though. Thank god in Australia we don't have to suffer this rubbish on network TV. Luke |

I've noticed a big increase in advertising in the past couple of weeks for the Masked Magician. Promos on TV and also a large electronic bill board in North Jersey on a major interstate. It seems he will not go quietly.

I don't know who he is but man I wish he'd at least clean up his fingernails! YUCK!
I think about the youngster just getting started, saving up his money and working with a TT or PK ring, dove pan etc. only to have it exposed by this clown... It's a shame anyone would do this...but..not the end of the world either. Best, Bk |
