I perform the Table of Terror, as I prefer to call it, in my show Escape Reality at Magicopolis in Santa Monica. More details about the show, and an anecdote about an Englishman who injured himself while watching me perform The Table, can be found here at the Café under The Marquee Says... Check out the Magicopolis thread, then come to see this modern classic presented live and in person.

I too own one of these effects as well. I really enjoy performing it and it still gets a great reaction from the audience.

I am curious to know just how much real danger is involved with this piece. I realize it is designed with safety in mind, but there are always possibilities.
It's all in the reflexes.

I've heard that Andre' Kole and Rick Thomas were both injured in this illusion... Can any one back this up?

Andre once told me that he and Mark Wilson were the consultants for tv program called The Magician with Bill Bixby. During the shoot Andre and Mark noticed something wrong with the performance and had to rush on stage to stop the shoot or Bill would have been killed. Andre told me the danger is VERY real if something goes wrong.

In as much as this was a private conversation in Mr. Wilson's office, I see no reason for him to be telling a tall tale. Now, there is nothing keeping that bed of spikes from falling but the rope. To infer that there is no danger at all is simply not true. Ropes can slip, the various things holding or supporting the rope and the weight of the bed and and do break or come loose. People have been killed doing these kind of things.. ...does the name Joe Burris ring a bell? This is why magic such as this is best left to highly trained professionals who get their equipment from highly skilled builders. |

Mark005,
Are you implying that there are no extra back-up safety catches built into this thing in the event that the rope does not hold? I find that very hard to believe. And very, very irresponsible if that is the case.
It's all in the reflexes.

I have just had an illusion built which is a similar idea in principle to the table or death although vastly different in its workings and method, it utilises the thumb tie principle so only puts the arms in danger. It was originally an idea that Paul Daniels used on his TV show back in the mid 90's. Paul kindly provided some information on it and allowed me to recreate it. The prop has been built here in the UK by Philip Hitchcock who is a magnificent builder I am absolutely delighted with the finished product and Philips ideas really took it to a whole other level.
The local press here in Oxford, has yesterday run an article on it and I thought some of you may like to see it as it is kind of linked to this discussion. They originally wanted the video to be of the new trick, but I was not keen to show it for free so convinced them to film some close-up stuff instead. magician Rich |

A table of death without safefty? That would be totally silly... I have 2 and live asstants as 3rd.
Well but it´s nonetheless still dangerous (also if you appear on top afterwards and not at another place)! Nothing to play with... |

While working with Andre' I laid on the table under the spikes. I don't care what safety features you have, it is still a chilling experience.

I almost had a very bad accident happen one night when my assistant did not notice that a weight had shifted and caused the whole prop to tip backwards. Luckly for me the spikes fell before it went over. The gasp from the audience was amazing. I crawled out from under the prop trying to make it look like it was supposed to happen. That night it almost lived up to its name. I have 3 safety checks in place but the effect is still dangerous. I love the effect and went right back the next night and performed it again. I learned a very valuable lesson that night and since then I have never had any problems. If you are considering this effect make sure you are ready for the risks.

Table of Death, none I am aware of, which is why I said "doing these kind of things"
Joe Burris is one; he was killed when the cement they were pouring over his box broke it and killed him. I do not recall the name, I'd have to look it up, but a young man in Michigan drowned in 6 feet of water trying to pick off a pair of handcuffs behind his back. There is Mike Russo who's rope broke and he fell on his head. It did not kill him, but he is brain dammaged and will remain so. Mike's story is even sadder when I say that when he told me, Abb Dixon, and Karrell Fox his plans to do it that way, I explained exactly why he should not. Abb took him by the arm and said "Listen to this man". Sadly, he did not. There was an illusionist who used real glass mirrors in his home made box, and in closing the lid, broke them on the assistant inside... There are so many.... |

Another- in July 2007, Princess Tenko had several ribs and her right cheek broken during a spike escape illusion which went wrong. She even continued her show for 30 minutes after the accident before it was called off. (Now that's dedication!)
