Honestly, I'm not so confident this time The show is in it's 3rd season and I was told that so far, only one group (ACROBATS) has won more than twice and made it to 5 wins and consequently became the shows 1st Hall of Famer
I just hope...the jurors will find the routine I made with the Hartz old lady and the vent mask funny Thanks Dan... Wanlu

On my way to the TV station...thanks for the kind thoughts from all of you
Back to the topic: Woody, the original figure of Mr Schaibley does not have a long headstick touching the bottom. Perhaps it too was refurbished by Mr Marshall when he repainted it. The back-up head that I own does not have a long headstick and has levers operating the mouth and winker. If it originally had a long headstick touching the base, then that explains why Mr Marshall's card is inside the head,it was repainted and changed into a modernized headstick by Frank Marshall Again, just speculations...but it does make sense. Why put your card inside the head of a figure if you only repainted it. Refurbishing it with a modernized headstick would give you the reasons to put your mark in the head. Memoirs of a Ventriloquist (John Schaibley) Page130 "I left Ruth Ann in Chicago but took Frank Marshall. the man who made the ventriloquial figures with me."

I did win 3rd and 4th and will need one more win to be in the "Hall of Fame." The show is in it's 3rd season and only one has won 5 times, a group of talented acrobats. The only group so far in the Hall of Fame. It's lonely to be the only group in that category and I really don't mind keeping them company...but I will need one more win...and I honestly don't know what to do yet. Used the Harts old lady and vent mask in round 3 and the Axtell ostrich and parrot in the 4th round. I won't be able to post pictures of a particular episode yet til that episode has been aired. Episode 1 was aired last Sat so pictures of that episode will be posted in my blog soon I'm also working on a video Thanks again Sincerely, Wanlu

Thanks Dan
Saw the pictures...really interesting! You did ask me what made me think the levers on my Mack are original? May I ask what you think about it please? I was speculating again that maybe the head originally had a long headstick with ring pull but later changed by Frank Marshall to the shorter headstick with levers. Thus explaining Mr Marshall's card in the head... FYI, I was told that Woody (Mr Schaibley's 1918 Mack) also has a short headstick. Wanlu

Wanlu the fact that your head was repainted by Mr Marshall clearly makes it possible that he may have shortened the head stick and even converted it to the lever controls. I would agree with you on that speculation!!

Wanlu, now you are guessing. That was without question a Frank Marshall figure from around 1930 or maybe even a bit earlier. It was still done in the manner of the mack figures with athe head stick to the bottom board and flat bottom neck. Also the paint was not the original paint as stated in the ad. It was repainted by Marshall more than likely in the 1940's because it had the Marshall orand color. His earlier work did not have the orange color. It was the front boards for the body.

Hi Dan,
Anne Schaibley's Goody figure was made in 1922...could it be considered a Marshall? That figure in Ebay had a long headstick which you insisted as the style of the Macks. Did Mr Marshall also made figures with long headtsticks touching the base of the board? I won't be surprised if he did because he did learn from the Macks right? But by 1930, he must have made figures with shorter headsticks already. I am just curious how you are certain that it's a Marshall and not a Mack despite the long headtsick touching the base of the board which was supposedly Mack style. What are your distinguishing factors so that we, perhaps in the future may also be able to distinguish Macks from Marshalls and vice versa...specially for figures made between 1919 to 1922 when the Macks were gone already. Much earlier figures will most probably be Macks like Woody and Windy Higgins and much later figures will most certainly be Marshalls. Interesting! Wanlu

Marshall made his figures in the same style as the Mack figures up until after 1931. This is evidenced by the picture of the heads which are shown in a row all with the long head sticks. I own quite a few Marshall figures with the long head sticks and they have the Marshall Cards still in them from the State St address. The one which we are talking about also had a Marshall face and not the Mack face. Your figure has the typical Mack duplicarver face.
Hope this helps. Dan http://www.ventriloquistcentral.com |

It didn't hurt that it was signed FRANK MARSHALL in the head either, if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks WANLU. I'm having a lot of fun with it.
If you have an old head there you would like customized let me know! I'm surprised by the people now asking for work. I'm doing a re-paint for ventriloquist KENNY WARREN here soon and have something else in the works after that. I just personally love how cool it is that you can take a fairly "average" ventriloquist figure face and make it something cool and expressive. Actually, from the artistic perspective the more average the face, the better...because it gives you more sculptural possibilities without having to do an excessive amount of "carving" away of a certain feature (if that makes sense). For example, if the figure has a BIG nose but you want something much smaller...well there is a lot more work involved. But if he has a very small nose (as most vent figures do) and they want something more pronounced, then the fun begins! I give all credit to Bill Nelson for my inspiration with this. He has really taught me a lot. |
