Where can I learn mime?

I've been told that the best place to learn mime is the center of a busy street. That way the people don't have to swerve to hit you...

Remember, a mime is a terrible thing to waste.

Try calling dance schools in the Yellow Pages. They might teach it there. If not, they may give you good advice on where to go to. It might even be good to go to a dance school to help get loosened up.

The Kapootz Klowns usually put on workshops in the cities where they are performing.

Use the name of your city and mime in your favorite search engine.

Years ago, (in the 70's) I took classes in Mime at Mime Wok. I also took classes in modern dance, ballet and tai chi.

Although I do what I call silent comedy in my routines I do not do "classic mime".

Using Interlibrary loan or your own library you can check out books and videos and perhaps c/d or dvd on mime techniques.

Mime beyond the standard jokes is still a great combination with magic.

Great acts in the past/present like Vito Lupo and Tina Lenart (sic?) are frequently the ones that get the standing ovations at conventions.

Just my 2 franklin halves worth.

There is a fantastic 2 tape video or dvd and book set on the market called "Mime spoken here". It was made by Tony Montanaro who was fantastic mime and teacher of mime. Unfortunately Mr. Montanaro passed away last December, but his work will live on through this set. A search on his name should give you the website where you can still order it. You may also want to check into the drama departments at colleges in your area. I know that the colleges around where I live at some point in the semester have at least one "Mime" or "Creative Movement" course.

I have a good book of mime, the title is The Mime Book. I got mine from http://www.onewaystreet.com. They carry another mime book also, but for ministry. The title is Mime Ministry.

If you can't find a class there is a two volume VHS set that comes with a book. It's called "The Mastery of Mimodrame" by Todd and Marilyn Farley. Seach on Farley and Mimodrame and you should find it. Also search mimeistry.

In the US, there is the Mime School in New York City - this is where Jeff McBride studied. If I remember correctly there is a school in LA and one in Vancouver BC Canada.

I have had the opportunity to study with Samuel Avital in Boulder, CO. (http://www.indranet.com/lcds.html) His BodySpeak teaches you the elements of mime - just like learning sleights or notes on the scale. Where you go from there is all up to you....

Try Richmond Shepard's book on Mime. It's great for basic techniques. If you live in L.A., I would go seek out Cary Trivanovich. He's the one I learned from. http://www.carytrivanovich.com/

Celebration Barn Theatre in Maine is where mime, improvisation, acting, alexander technique, Linklater voice and other workshops run in the summer. It is a center for training performers of all kinds, and was started by world famous mime teacher and artist Tony Montanaro.

If you like traveling there is a Marcel Marceau school in Paris France with an international section and, for students, life in Paris can be very unexpensive.

I use this book and DVD combo - http://www.mimetheatre.com/store/main.html - I really like them both. Nothing will take the place of going to a class but this is the next best thing I've found.
