There is a doc on the Carny life now playing on TVO, Ontario Canada's version of PBS, called Carny. Something you might look for in your local tv market sometime soon I'm guessing. Info:

Well worth watching, but not if you're depressed.

Absolutely gratifyingly devoid of "gosh wow it's a carnival" and "what weeeerd people," but a parade of dysfunctional lives lightened by one single fact: on the lot, they accept you for whatever you are.

Never saw anything like it, you should see it.

It was a very well made film. Though I have very little experience on the midway, I thought it was a pretty good reflection of the people I've met working the carnivals. I also liked the 8mm "look" to the film. Like Ross said, it's not glamorous by any means like some of the other docs, but very real. I give it ***1/2 stars out of ****.

Just a note...The term Outdoor Showmen always encompased the joints of all kinds and anyone doing biz on the lot not just a sideshow operator but ride owners as well as the retailers and food ops etc.

Yep.

What was the name of that Outdoor Showman's Association I used to belong to?
Completely lost to memory or lack of. Was it OABA? hmmm Outdoor Amusement Business Association?

edit: Yep that was it. Don't mind me...talkin' to myself...hey the canary died.

I enjoyed it as well. Brought up some old memories. Some fond, some not so fond. I had a single ride and traveled around for three years. Then I made a private party biz out of it. Met some interesting characters much like the ones in the doc. Wish they had shown a little more of the sideshow but I suppose there are plenty of docs for that already.

I watched the whole thing on Sundance last night. I DVR it as well to show my wife what my life used to be like.

While driving today I had to laugh at the fella that thought he was gonna get 40 miles to the gallon on an old truck he bought for 500 bucks. They aren't always the brightest bulb in the knife drawer.
