I am going to be building some illusions and have always loved the elevator by David Copperfield invented by Steinmyer I believe. I am not doing the elevator but have loved the **** (one of the first principles learned in the Osbourne books chapter called hiding places) (The one Copperfield uses not sure if Doug hennings was the saem) The **** was cool and it was in midair. But it seemed to take up SUCH a small footprint.
Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbewgwpFENs&feature=related It looks like it is abut 4 feet by 4 feet square. Is this a standard **** and my eyes decieve me? How big is the footprint really? If it is a standard is there a different way to be in it? On your side in a fetal position?
Thanks,

Ahhh I kind of see the on side or fetal position
I was trying to use the stars and didn't say the name All the illusionists know the principle and was trying to use the stars to cover it I see though

If you've ever seen one of David's shows live, you will realize that he uses very BIG props, and very large #### @@@@ They tend to look smaller on a large stage, but he really has some massive props.

I assume the large size of his props allows the table to have an extremely subtle bevel, am I correct?

Heaven on the 11th(?) floor, aka 'The Elevator', has always been my favorite appearance illusion that DC does. It was the first appearance I ever saw him do. It was 1992, I was 7, the show was called "Flying: Living the Dream" and that was the show that changed my life - the reason I got interested in magic. I can remember the day vividly, and still remember how magical it felt walking into that theater and getting to see David at his very best.
Watching tapes of that special and hearing Phil Collins still gives me the chills. 90's Copperfield specials are like my Bible.

I hear you Corey. That is one of the most magical routines David has ever done and is my favorite appearance illusion. I sort of like his minimalistic approach these days with "One", but nothing beats that moment when the music crescendos and the silouette comes down from nowhere.

I agree 100 percent it is also all about presentation
Doug Henning was a great magician and did the elevator as well. Think about DCs Version and something as simple as hangining it in the air as opposed to on a platform and just that one minor chgange and how the routin is so much better Have some more thoughts on it but need to go to bed its 8:49am and Ive been up since 7:30am yesterday I am just getting back from a trip to the casino

Doug Henning was a great magician and did the elevator as well. Yep. If I recall, Doug used it as both a production and a vanish, didn't he? When he toured in the 80's, it was the opening production, I think. But it's also used on "The Magic Show" video to produce Didi Conn and then to vanish both she and Doug at the end of the show. I may be wrong. Have to check. Dan/EARL |

Daid and Doug used completely different methods. The one that David used was created solely for him, I believe, while the one that Doug used is the "standard" version that has been for sale several times on Magic Auction. This was actually one of Doug's lesser illusions on The Magic Show DVD, as far as I was concerned. He has some trouble with it, and it looks sort of flimsy as he struggles with it.
Since we're on the subject of the Elevator, this is a great chance to bring up a few questions about ethics as they pertain to illusions. I know that the "flown" version of the Elevator and the method it employs is Steinmeyer's/Copperfield's, but would you rate the following situations as acceptable or unacceptable: 1. A "flown" Elevator with an entirely different method? 2. A flown appearance that doesn't use an elevator, but a square base and an open frame with roller shades that lower and raise? 3. The "elevator shadow" effect (I saw something similar in an act years before Copperfield's version)? 4. A different appearance that employs a base and is themed like an elevator? ...or, is the elevator theme completely off-limits? Thanks.

Depends who your asking. If your asking David he might say everything is off limits. If your asking Jim Steinmeyer,
he Might say that the elevator can be licensed - but with limits (cant fly it or build with all sides that open like Davids) I recall seeing a copy of the prop (with exception to the landing platform) on magic auction a long time ago. Not sure what happened to it . I recall reading it cant be flown or something. . If I were to do an elevator Illusion (which I have considered) I'd probably stay away from anything that remotely resembles David's Doug's or Jim's. Its possible to design an elevator Illusion that is different... Thought it might be cool to do a tower of terror kind of effect - spirit cabinet meets elevator . . Many options. Just depends on your imagination ... |

Clinton,
I do not believe I have seen an elevator like Doug's (where the back door is let down) on the magic auction site. There has been one up a couple of times which has bounced through several owners including John Bundy. Perhaps I missed it. (There was one recently which may have been similar to Doug's, but the photo was't clear. But I have come across 3 very different manners for the elevator to be done. B

Hi everyone
Steve Wyrick's current show features a flown elevator that he appears in with a shadow. It is almost exactly the same as David's bar the colour of it (it has an old wood finish, similar to the lifts of the 1930's). Is he infringing on the Copperfield/Steinmeyer idea without paying for them? It's very odd as the rest of show features stuff that he has clearly paid to have built properly. It doesn't look like there is much of a budget issue in his show, so I am confused as to why he may have done this? I may be totally wrong and he may have permission of course, does anyone know? |

I saw Doug perform the Elevator live once, and he didn't let the back door down. Could this have been a later addition?

R1ch-oxford: I'd bet he and DC have some understanding . . . Vegas is a small town - everyone knows everyone. I'd be hard to do something DC would not approve of . .

The elevator was not used as a vanish in the movie version of The Magic Show, but was used as an exit. The shadow rose, but the box was not reopened. One very important feature about Doug Henning's that has not been mentioned is the fact that when the box is shown empty it has a brick interior, and after the appearance it has a beautifully painted interior. I saw Doug perform this illusion many times, and it was always ehchanting! It was his exclusive illusion for many years and it should be remembered that he did it for many years before DC. |
