As a hobbyist magician I have the luxury of not needing to rely on appearance to get more gigs, stand out from the crowd, etc
Having said that....I always want to dress, act, and entertain as a true professional. What are your thoughts on jeans and a t-shirt? |

Ummm... if it fits your performance character a la David Blaine then go for it. This is a hard question to answer though, considering the huge variety of denim and tees out there. Are you talking about for casual impromptu performances?
People who work for Theory 11: Do you want a young guy without a stupid gelled haircut or eurotrash jeans for your videos? PM me.

If you want to look and act like a true professional, there are very few who can get away with a very casual look. David Copperfield and David Blaine, etc, are exceptions. They are big names and don't have to rely on a "first impression."
However, performing close-up miracles in short sleeves is impressive to an audience. And who am I to argue with Bruce Springsteen.

Keeping in mind that my 3 piece cost less that $100 and Blaine's Tee Shirt probably cost more the $100. It's all about the impression you want to create. It is your job (and no, being a hobbyist doesn't change this) as a magician to create an entire experience, and that experience is made of many many details. You clothing is part of those details. If what you are trying to say, is best said by jeans and a Tee Shirt, then nothing else will do. Just be careful you create an experience worth having.

What ever makes you "feel" like a magician. If you feel like one, you will act like one and be one. If you look in the mirror see yourself and think oh yea, show time! Then that's the look for you.

A magician must always stand out in a crowd. A fine T-shirt, pressed jeans, and matching jean jacket would work if you are performing for free.

Hey Al: Jeans with a jean jacket, I think they call that the "Canadian Tuxedo" (good to have you back)
Back to topic: I once read from someone on here that as a performer you always want to dress atleast a little better then everyone else at the event. If you are doing a casual outdoor event then maybe you could pull off nice jeans, a good T shirt, and a good pair of shoes (no sneakers). If you are doing a more formal event, like a holiday party, I would say you should dress a little nicer. One thing to keep in mind, espically if you are getting paid, give your customers something of value for their money. To me this means presenting a good appearence with myself and my equipment. |

If you look like Brad Pitt you can wear anyting your want and people won't mind.
Brad was on Oprah yesterday. Please don't tell anybody I watched Oprah. My wife was watching it so I did. OK!

What if T Shirt said --
"Do Tricks for Food" or "Ask about my Magic Touch!" And you know ripped genes are good for bizarrists -- and ripped jeans are great for gaffs!

I think it really depends on where you are performing. I change my attire depending on where I'm performing but always keep a certain "style" constant. For instance, I may wear a t-shirt and jeans while performing walk-around at a college bar but you wouldn't catch me wearing that on a stage.

Or scruffy.. that might be worse. brush your hair, shave (or trim that beard) and shine those shoes!

I know this is an older topic but I wanted to throw in my 2 copper coins worth of thought.
One thing I have found (still a newbie) is that wearing slacks/dockers makes ditches easier. The pocket opening tends to be larger and looser than most jeans. I used to drive an 18 wheeler for a living and wouldn't have parted with my jeans for the world. Due to some health complications I don't drive any more and have taken to office work. Now that I have gotten used to dress pants, I wouldn't go back to jeans unless I didn't have anything else clean. Don't dress for the job you have, dress for the job you want. |

Well said, I hadn't thought about it that way, but this is something I'll have to remember.
Thanks dmueller and welcome to the Café!! I hope you enjoy your stay with us. Cheers, Danton

Wearing simple clothes that do not stand out makes your performance all the more astonishing (if you do a good job)

Yes, I am a magician. No I did not make my hare (hair) disappear... it just took early retirement.
