I have plenty of nieces and nephews. They always ask for magic. They like the finger magic and quarter to ear.

Coin Magic. Make it disappear and reappear anywhere you want, just nothing that involves the coin going into your mouth.

Ball up paper or dollar bills or toilet paper or a napkin and do many things:
Sponge ball routine Torn and restored napkin Paper balls over the head Etc. A whole routine out of things that are already in the environment and clearly are not gimmicked. :magicrabbit: |

Coin effects are always good and available. Don't have to be half dollars.
'Ghost Bills' is impromptu and there are other impromptu effects using a couple of bills. Some quite old. It really depends on what objects are available at the moment. I've spent an hour or better with a bunch of kids sitting around me and doing some magic with stuff that was available. Mostly I was just goofing around with them. It's more about entertaining them than doing tons of magic. |

Hard to go wrong with colored sponge balls. I also carry a quarter, a penny and a piece of bubble gum for a quick routine that begins with a "magic penny that I found on the floor" and ends with a transformation to the gum that the kids get to keep.
Life is an improv. The game goes on...

A short routine with paper balls is always a big hit with the little ones... and the bigger ones too.
I often start with a couple of scraps of paper. (If I have a minute to prep, I set up to do a torn and restored effect.) Then go into a 'two in the hand, one in the pocket' type routine using small crumpled paper balls. The 'Ten Count' (popularized by Frank Garcia and often credited to Tenkai) is always very well received and can be done with paper balls, hard candy, etc. As Jaz stated, with kids it's more about just playing with them and being entertaining.

It's winter over here in the UK and I recently learnt the scarf through the neck trick. My 9 year old son was amazed by it. Obviously very impromptu at this time of year and if you can use the kids scarf I think it makes it even more amazing for them.

I always carry in my pocket few sponge balls, and when little kids ask me to perform I do a simple routine of sponge ball multiplication in their hands, and they totally love it.

Coins are generally the best bet. Readily available and props easily recognized and understood by the kids. Vanish a coin and find it behind the ear or make it change. The first trick I ever remember seeing was a simple switch to cause a change.

Kids always seem to have crayons available. I do the mental effect where I predict the color of the crayon that they hand me behind my back. I follow up with a crayon (cigarette) vanish to the pocket.

For a single kid, I like to give him/her something to take home. I have collected a bunch of black and white stones, have them in the car, and pocket two of one color and one of the other. After a couple of single stone passes and a two stone move, I give him the 'white' and keep the 'black' -- with him discovering he has the other color -- which he joyfully gets to keep.
