If you're talking with a mate about relativity, of course "je suis pas clair" will sound "understandable" to your interlocutor, he will comprehend "I need to be more clear". But without context it means something like "I'm not really in order"... Same stuff for "je suis kevin". In french, we don't care who you are if you are not asked . If I ask "who are you", you ought to answer "I am kevin". But if you talk on your own, without any question, you would say "My name is kevin". |

Well, as long as we're gonna get serious and all that:
I asked my wife whether you could say, "Ich bin nicht klar...." and she said no. Then I asked, so you would say, "es ist mir nicht klar...." and she said right. So the German isn't any good either. Did I ever tell y'all that I am totally fluent in bad German? |

When translating, choose your words and phrases carefully. Avoid slang. Instead of "I'm hot" say "I am beautiful". That's much less ambiguous. Use present tense. Try to keep to a core 500-word vocabulary; use simple words. For example, don't use "ambiguous."

The differences between the french and the english in the first example are nothing compared to the weird translations that can come up between western and eastern languages, for instance, and yet even then functional language is attainable. That's generally the aim of these translation devices. You're not trying to pass yourself off as fluent in a foreign language, you're just trying to find the bathroom before bad things happen.
